The Fitting Experiment – Sabrina Slims

The Fitting Experiment – Episode 1

Background: I am hanging out with some new bloggers friends and we are calling our adventure, The Fitting Experiment. Our goal is to test out patterns that are drafted with a large size range to determine if the pattern has a great fit across the board. We are looking at comparing the fit across the size chart, construction techniques and directions, included options, and anything else the bloggers want to chat about. With some friends, we began this group because there is so much talk about size inclusiveness and why it is important. I was getting some strong feelings towards the entire topic and as a larger size person, I know it is more difficult for me to find a pattern drafted in my size compared to someone who is a size medium, but honestly everyone struggles. If a pattern companies “Block” isn’t suited to your body it won’t matter what size it comes in.  Through this experiment, maybe you will learn a little bit about fitting patterns to your shape. One of the best things about sewing is knowing how to correct these issues and get a great fit. Our hope is that you can see and maybe learn how to better fit your handmade clothing.

The Mission: This is our first run, a test drive if you will. we have been delayed for a knee injury and the flu so far, but we made it! I suggested the Love Notions Sabrina Slims while it was still in the size expansion phase. Since the re release, it has become a great seller and loads of folks are sewing up some awesome pants! First off, I want to mention we have 8 bloggers who have sewn and reviewed the Sabrina Slims and we are all different sizes and shapes! The fun thing about that we are all so different- short, tall, thick, thin, and we are doing exactly what we love! The only rule for the experiment is to sew the pattern up and blog about it. We quickly had our bloggers on deck. Love Notions was super generous and provided all the bloggers with the pattern, plus two extras to give away to our readers. As an extra bonus, they gave us a discount code to share with our readers to get the pattern for themselves!

The Experiment: I keep talking about my mission to get great fitting pants and I am soooo close! So I am sharing my 3rd pair of Sabrina Sleeves with you today. I made two pair in testing and improved on the fit with each try out. I will tell you a secret, LN’s wrote a pants fitting guide that is truly amazing! Even the seasoned sewists have commented on how extensive it is. This pair of trousers is made with Liverpool. I love Liverpool fabric for my “dressier” garments. I like that they hold their shape and is so comfortable. So between my first 2 pair, both made in Ponte, and my third pair in Liverpool I am loving the process. Here are those 3 photos side by side.

As you can see each pair has been slimmed down slightly through the seat, hip and thigh areas and the fit is getting better. I think my next pair I will add about 1/2 inch to the calf area to reduce the pull lines I am seeing there. Other adjustments I made –
Full Belly Adjustment 100% needed as my belly size doesn’t match my booty size.
Smoothed down the curve of the hip. I don’t have womanly hip curves at all.
Shorted length above the knee and below the knee. Removed 1 inch from the rise.

These pants are about to become a staple in my wardrobe! They are so comfy! I even added butt pockets! For me, pockets are life. If I love a pattern, I will sew all the pockets.  I paired my Sabrina Slims with a Love Notions Laundry Day Tee…in the tank version! I blogged about it here.

I am a single dog mom of two and we happily reside in a small house in Ohio. We spend our days playing fetch, digging holes in the garden, and sewing, lots of sewing. We have high hopes of moving to the mountains someday. The dogs don’t really know that yet, but they will understand. I shamelessly hoard fabric and feel slightly sorry for whoever has to sort my stash when I am gone. I am employed full time in a industry that requires little of my creativity, but basically lets me wear whatever I want. So it works out. I can usually be found behind one of my sewing machine avoiding human contact. I test a lot of clothing patterns and therefore always have a new outfit to share. You have most likely found my blog through some sort of sewing outlet and will quickly realize that I am sewing for a plus size body. For reference, I am 5'1 and wear a range from a 2-5x. Sizes change with every designer and you can't trust ready to wear sizing when you are making your own clothing. Your tape measure will become one of your most used tools and if you misplace them like I do, you should pick up several. I will be sharing the good, the bad, and the A-MA-ZING with you… So stay tuned. I will also try to teach you a few of my tricks along the way. People always tells me they want to learn how to sew. My best advice is you have to start. Just do it! You are going to mess up, you will break needles, you will ruin the pretty fabric, you will stab your fingers, but you will learn. You will make something and you will wear it. Someone will say, “I like your shirt.” and you will smile and say, “Thanks, I made it.” You will race home and make something else. Pretty soon you have made more good things than bad and you will feel proud of yourself and you should. I will be proud of you too. :) Ok, that is enough rambling, I have sewing to do. :) SequoiaLynn

  1. Thank you for doing this! I love the idea. It’s so helpful to know if a pattern is drafted for your body size. It’s one of the reasons I’ve been scared to try pants ( other than sweats)

  2. I’ve been watching this pattern, I think it should be my next purchase! I’ve got a large belly combined with what I call a “grandpa frog butt” lol… Not much hip and zero booty. I like that there’s a mod for the belly, did not know that!

  3. Thank you for this. My first two pairs of Sabrinas turned out so badly, that I literally wadded them both up and stuffed them under my bed!!! But I know that while still a poor fit (my family literally told me not to wear them out of the house ever), the second pair was a better fit than the first (the first was such a bad fit that my husband begged me not to wear them at home even!).

I’m going to try again. And again. I have an inspiration photo of pants I want to recreate in olive green (my new “neutral” I’m adding to put more color into my wardrobe) and I have some more stretch denim washed and ready for go three.

  4. I am a beginner sewer and this post us great. It helps to see the process of finding the best fit for your own body shape. I always thought that sewing a garment was quick and easy but there’s a lot of work that goes into creating beautiful things.

  5. I love The Fitting Experiment. It is nice to see how the same pattern can be made for different bodies. I was a bit afraid of the Sabrina Slims because I didn’t think it would look that great on my body, but after reading through all the blogs, the fear is gone and I will give it a try.

Nice pants and your top is awesome.

  14. Thank you for your encouraging post… I have been avoiding sewing pants due to the many fit adjustments required, but if you can stick with it & make 3 pairs (each better than the last) then hopefully a good fitting pair of pants will be achievable for me as well, & I can avoid getting too discouraged 🙂

  19. I have already purchased the pattern, but haven’t sewn it up yet. I appreciate the project you all have planned, I hope you keep going on many other patterns!
I think my body is closest to yours, would you consider sharing your measurements or the size/s you started with before adjustments?
Also is there anyway we could see a picture of the front waist-belly-crotch area without the tunic top covering it?
I appreciate your comments on fabric choice as well. I hate sewing up a possibly misfitting muslin from a semi-expensive fabric, but it is important for getting the best fit in your final fabric! Your fit looks great, so it appears to have been worth the 2 previous ponte muslins!
