The Fitting Experiment – Hourglass Dress

The Fitting Experiment

Episode 2- The Hourglass Dress

Background: I am hanging out with some new bloggers friends and we are calling our adventure, The Fitting Experiment. Our goal is to test out patterns that are drafted with a large size range to determine if the pattern has a great fit across the board. We are looking at comparing the fit across the size chart, construction techniques and directions, included options, and anything else the bloggers want to chat about. After this episode, we are adding more friends and not all of them are actual bloggers. Some use other platforms of social media and some make videos. We are mixing things up and expanding our game!

The Fitting Experiment is back from quarantine and ready to share our latest project. This is the Hourglass Dress from Made by Runi. Yup, You read that right… DRESS! Psst: I know I am wearing a shirt! I made it into a shirt length because my closet is stuffed to the max with dresses. ๐Ÿ™‚ Let’s start with the details of the pattern.

The pattern includes sizes 34-58 (European sizes).
Options included are: slim fit or flared skirt

Hourglass silhouette or solid front and back bodices.

Colorblock shoulder detailing

Two neckline options

Three sleeve lengths

I went with the flared fit, lower neckline, solid bodices and colorblocked short sleeves.

IMG_2516

Adjustments: I am just outside of the waist measurement for this pattern, but I straightened out the hourglass shape of the pattern (since I don’t have one) and blended from the bust to the hip and now it fits wonderfully. I also did a full bust adjustment and a bicep adjustment for this pattern. These are both adjustments I make on nearly all patterns I wear. This pattern called for binding the neckline, but I made bands. I am honestly terrible at binding, it looks like rubbish always. So I measured the opening, did the match, banded the neck. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hemmed the sleeves and bottom.

New to me- I had to add seam allowances to the pattern. Apparently, this is a normal thing with European patterns…I had no idea. While this did take a little bit of extra time, it allowed me to pick the SA I wanted to use. The pattern pages also needed to be trimmed before assembling. So this pattern required a good bit of prep work before I could get down to sewing. Another thing that was a bit odd to me, the directions for assembling are on the website instead of with the pattern. While all these things are typical for the companies I usually sew, it wasn’t a deal breaker for me to sew. I only wish the size range included more sizes so I wouldn’t have to adjust so many things to get a great fit.

IMG_2517

Overall, I am happy with the fit after adjustments and will likely make the colorblocked version as well. This is a comfy top and I am wearing it to work today. I like that this top has a few different options to change up the look of it. This one will get a lot of use this summer!

Taylor Tank Tunic

I am finally starting my summer wardrobe and knew I wanted to add a few new pieces to the line up. I sewed up the 5oo4 Taylor tank. The Taylor features a wide racer back and can be made with your choice of a flat or gathered back bodice. I choose to do the gathered option because why not? ๐Ÿ™‚ It didn’t take much longer. It is only running a gathering stitch a few inches and it adds a cute little detail.

5oo4 Taylor (3)

I sewed up a straight 5x since this pattern doesn’t include the usual FBA that 5oo4 has. I should have just done it myself as it is a little larger in the arms and back than I need. It is still a super cute tunic that I will wear all summer long. I appreciate that the racer back is wider than most, but still doesn’t cover my regular bra straps. Also worth noting, this pattern doesn’t have a back bodice seam, but due to using a fabric scrap I had to add one to make it work. ๐Ÿ™‚

5oo4 Taylor (2)

The Taylor Racerback pattern includes the following options:

  • 4 bodice styles: Tank, Tunic, A-line Dress, and Swing Dress
  • Maternity option with ruched sides
  • Traditional Racerback
  • Gathered Racerback
  • Optional pockets for the swing dress bodice

5oo4 Taylor (4)

This one will be easy to dress up or down depending on your accessories and fabric choices. Wear it to the park, pair it over a swim suit, or lounge around in the back yard. This is a super versatile top!

Christmas gift blogging in April?

Me Made May – Day 6
I still haven’t caught up with blogging about all the Christmas sewing projects I made. So here is the next one! I sewed up the Keeley Cardigan for my cousin, Heather. Each year for Christmas my dad’s side of the family does a family gift exchange. We draw names around Halloween and then spend a few months finding a great gift. Around that time, I had just tested the Keeley Cardigan and I loved it. I knew my cousin Heather would also.
Keeley (1)
I ordered this pretty mint green and gray sweater knit fabric from Ksews AKA The Material Girls on Facebook. I knew that Heather would love the pale green color and the softness of this fabric. If I am being honest I had to force myself not to keep it for myself and green isn’t even “my” color. It was just lovely.
Keeley (3)
I decided to make hers a midi length which is half way between both the included pattern lengths. She frequently wears her clothes in layers so it really was an easy choice. To get this length, I just printed the full length pattern and added 10 inches to the shorter length. Cut your pattern (and fabric) at this length. You will also adjust your front band length the same way. Patterns are really very easy to customize. Just think about what you want it to look like in the end, and go for it. Sometimes you will mess up, but
just move on. Why didn’t it work? How can you save it? Don’t quit!
Keeley (2)
This pattern comes together very quickly when sewn in a more basic version. I decided
to not add front pockets since this sweater knit is a lighter weight. If you are using a lighter weight knit, you could always interface at the corners of the pockets to give more support to your stitches. This pattern has an option to add buttons to the front as well.
I took a few pictures of this pattern on a mannequin before the wrapping it, and a few quick pics after gifting. I think she liked it and hope she has enjoyed wearing in all winter long!

Stitchin’ Pretties!

Love Notions – Vivace

Vivace is about to be your most comfortable everyday garment. As a shirt, tunic, or a dress, you can’t beat it! This is a super fast sew, but the extra wide neck band and the front pleat makes it a little fancy! Don’t worry, the wide V neck collar isn’t too tricky. The designer, Tami, even made a little video to show you how to do it.
Sequoia LV Vivace 4x FBA-5x (7)
So first up, fabric choices. I used a beautiful floral double brushed poly that I picked up from Ksews AKA The Material Girls on Facebook. I had 3 yards of this beautiful fabric. It sewed up so neatly. I adored the bright cheery colors of this one and then I added the striped contrasting fabric for the neck and sleeve bands for even more color. This stripes are cut on grain which is the opposite of the directions tell you to do, but I wanted my strips to be short instead of long. This pattern requires a knit fabric with 40% stretch and DBP has the required stretch in both directions, so it worked out fine!ย  You could also make your top out of a woven fabric as that pattern is included as well.
Sequoia LV Vivace 4x FBA-5x (5)

ย Now let’s talk about options.ย

  • XS-5X
  • Knit and woven versions
  • Full Bust pattern pieces if needed
  • Dolman style sleeve
  • Three lengths- shirt, tunic & dress
  • Trimless pattern format
  • Layers
  • Print at home
  • In addition to the print-at-home
  • fileย is aย large format fileย for copy shop printing is included for both standard and full busts. These files will print on six A0 (33โ€ณ x 46โ€ณ) size sheets. Be sure to instruct your printer to print actual size in black and white on their cheapest paper. We recommendย PDFPlottingย for printing the large format files.
  • A projector file is also included for those using projector technology

Sequoia LV Vivace 4x FBA-5x (6)

I sewed up the 4x FBA graded to a 5x. I used the 5x sleeves so I wouldn’t need to do a bicep adjustment and my sleeves would still fit. These sleeves are a roomier fit which is nice. Myย originalย plan was to make the tunic length, but I had enough fabric for the dress length, so I went for it. I am happy I did, I could easily tie a knot at one side and wear this as a tunic! Double-Duty without the work! I couldย absolutelyย see sewing a few of these up, just to wear around the house as a house dress. Ultra comfy, super cozy. Totally a win-win
This dress sewed together very quickly as most Dolamn style garments, but it will take a few minutes to interface the neckband pieces..Don’t skip this step. It will make a difference in how neatly your neckband lays.ย
Sequoia LV Vivace 4x FBA-5x (9)
I think this dress will make the perfect summer dress. A little fancier than the basic tshirt dress, but just and easy to make and wear. I have one cut out for Momma Mia already. Give my blog a follow and stop back in a few days to see it!

Candy Pants

Psst I am sharing pants again…Candy Pants!!! I told you, I am on a mission for the perfect fit. These pants are pretty much awesome sauce out of the gate! For both pairs I made, I used the yoga pants pattern which is a little wider in the leg than the leggings options. Oh wait! Did I say options?!?! How about we switch things up here and start with all the options. We know 5oo4 always loads up on the options!
Women's Candy Pants 5oo4 4x (1)
The Candy Yoga Pants and Leggings is a PDF sewing pattern that includes:
  • Womenโ€™s sizes XXS โ€“ 5XL
  • Yoga Pants or Leggings
  • Solid or Colorblocked versions for both yoga pants and leggings
  • Optional side pockets (to be used with the colorblocked version)
  • 7 Lengths: 2โ€ณ, 5โ€ณ and 7โ€ณ shorts, pedal pusher, capri, ankle and long
  • 4 rises: High, Mid, Low and Extra Low/Maternity
  • Regular waistband options include exposed elastic, regular knit, foldover yoga band and contour
  • Maternity waistband options include full overbelly panel, contour, regular knit and foldover yoga band
  • Full, half or no gusset options
  • Check out thisย YouTube videoย of all of our testersโ€™ versions!
For my fit test pants, I made the 4x waist with the legs graded down to the 3x. I found the legs a little snug for a yoga pant. I think in testing I told Rachelle that “they gets stuck on my legs.” LOL meaning the were a little clingy at my knee and calf. You can see in the side by side photos that the black with rust floral print is a bit weird at my knee and calf compared to the navy with colorful floral print. Ahh improving my pants fitting game. This is why we do a muslin, so we know what works, what needs improved, and how to best good our good fabric.

I chose to use the full gusset for both pair of pants. A gusset in pants is added for a little extra room in the crotch. Usually a full gusset is used in athletic pants so there is a little more room for doing squats and stuff.ย ๐Ÿ™‚ I just don’t like tight fitting anything! This pattern can be made with a full, without the gusset or with a half gusset. The first time I botched a gusset was another 5oo4 pattern. Theย Rip Tide Shorts. They worked out fine, but after watching the video in the pattern, I did it right the first time!
Women's Candy Pants 5oo4 4x (8)
These pants turned out super comfy and I will need to add a bunch of them to my closet as well as some shorts for wearing under all my dresses. By the way, did I tell you how quickly these came together. No outside leg seam makes them super speedy and one less annoyance for folks with sensory issues.
Women's Candy Pants 5oo4 4x (3)
I *Think* the black with rust flower print is from Sew Blessed and the Navy with colorful ones is from Ksews. Both companies have loads of great deals, quick shipments and are lovely with customer service.

Blog Tour: Working out with Rebecca Page

Hi! Welcome to my stop on the Working Out with Rebecca Page Blog Tour. If you are a regular reader here at SequoiaLynn Sews, “Howdy!” If this is your first visit, “Welcome!”
Working-Out-with-Rebecca-Page-Blog-Tour
You may be thinking I don’t look like the typical person who shares clothing geared towards “Working Out,” and that is ok. Exercise comes in all styles and at all levels. Some people run marathons and some people may park farther from the storeย  to gain a few steps as they walk inside. No matter where you are in your level of fitness, you deserve super comfy clothing!ย  Some people find yoga pants and a tank to be their happy place, while I love sweat pants and comfy shirts. Don’t worry, all week long you will see some great clothing on the blog tour! So make sure you click all the links and see what Rebecca Page has to offer you! Oh yeah, there are also prizes!!! Keep on reading, Folks!
RPWorking Out tour. (5)
I picked a couple patterns that you may not even associate with any type of exercise, but they are perfect for it. Outside of sewing, I am obsessed with Geocaching and I love being in the woods so these two hobbies go great together. I made an ultra comfy cozy outfit for a walk in the woods. Let’s start with the Celine Trousers.
The Celine Trousers can be made from knit or woven fabrics which is kinda awesome! In case you didn’t know, there are a lot of Rebecca Page pattern that are drafted for both.ย  I knew I wanted to use this super soft and cozy French terry to make my pants. I had not made these pants before, but I jumped right in anyhow. I always suggest making a muslin before you cut your “good fabric,” but I didn’t have time because I am a procrastinator. If you have been a regular reader at my blog, you know that this year one of my goals is to master pants fit issues. These pants bring me one step closer. I can see a few adjustments that I want to make on my next pair, but am overall pleased with how these pants turned. I did a full belly adjustment because that seems to be one of my issues with pants fitting properly. I should have used a smaller size for the legs and used the belly adjustment to correct the fit. Next time, I will have these babies perfect! Another option that comes with the Celine Trouser is the stripe down the outer leg seams. With a lot of patterns, I am guilty of skipping the “options” because I am sometimes lazy and usually wait until the last minute to sew. I used a coordinating French Terry for this feature. I cut the stripe slightly wider than the original pattern suggestion because I wanted to be sure to have solid white stripes on the outside of my strip. I folded it in half wrong sides together (because the seam will be hidden and I didn’t want to turn the tube.) then serged the long sides together. I adjusted my tube so that there was white on stripes on the outside edges and pinned it in place covering the side seam of the pants. I stitched it in place using a lightening bolt stitch being careful not to pull or stretch my fabrics to prevent waves. These pants took me about 2 hours to make from start to finish. Not a bad evening project and so so comfy!
This plush French Terry is from Ksews AKA The Material Girls on Facebook! Honestly, Kailynn is awesome! I contacted her in a pinch last week because I was behind and I needed fabric ASAP! She shipped same day! I suggest you look her up on Facebook!!
RPWorking Out tour. (3)
My Paris top has already made an appearance on my blog, but it has been awhile and in a totally different context! Last time I paired the Paris Party top with the beautiful Arabella Skirt and was super adorable and dressy. Now I am wearing the SAME shirt with French Terry pants and looking oh so casual and cool! I love adding versatile pieces to my closet! I love that I can pair these two pieces together and look great, but it is still winter in Ohio and it can be cold so I always pack my Circle Cardigan in case it gets chilly!
RPWorking Out tour. (2)
The Circle Cardigan alone has tons of options, but as a core piece in my closet is an all purpose cardigan! I wear it with jeans and tees, over sleeveless dresses, layered over tunics and leggings. I made this one more than 2 years ago and still wear it at least once a week because it is so comfy.
RPWorking Out tour. (3)
I have one last staple that I need anytime I am heading out. I need a cute bag to carry all my stuff in. Extra chapstick, a bottle of water, and my hairbrush are always on board and fit perfectly into the Toiletry Bag that recently released. It is actually still on sale!! This bag was quick to make, easily customized by endless options of quilting cotton prints, and just flat out fun! This pattern also comes in a 2 larger sizes which would make room for a change of clothes and sneakers!

38 Trips Around the Sun

Instead of being like a thousand other bloggers, I decided to write my New Years Blog Post for my Birthday! Yep, today I am 38. I am not usually one who gets crazy about turning a year older, except when I turned 25…”It wasย dark times Harry, Dark Times…” That was a rough one! When I think about the things I have done in the last year, I am pretty happy. I switched positions at my job, I bought my first brand new car, I realized it is ok to do fun things alone, upgraded to a new DSLR camera, took my first photography class and I even had time to sew some awesome clothes. I rediscovered my love for geocaching and hiking as well. Overall it was a good year, but I want to make this year even better.

I have spent several weeks/months really thinking of the direction I want to take my blog. I am just like every other blogger, I want to grow my audience and reach more people. I have noticed a lot of new faces following my social media accounts and for that, I am so grateful. It feels good to be noticed. I don’t know if the average person realizes how much work goes into being a sewing blogger. Pick a pattern, sew it up at least once (typically more), photos, photo edits, write blog posts, then share. ๐Ÿ™‚ I do enjoy it though. I like knowing there is a record of my progress. I often look back at blog posts to remind myself of the changes I made to a garment and if I liked the fit or not. I love that other people will randomly find a blog post and leave me a message or pick up a pattern I haven’t mentioned in months. It makes me feel good knowing someone saw the joy in my blog. It also makes makes me feel good when I see kind comments from someone I don’t know.
Being a sewing blogger isn’t all sunshine and flowers though. Every single post is a risk. That seems a little odd, but it is true. Every post we make, every share we do, puts us up for being judged. Readers, I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t feel good to me. The comments people make shock me sometimes. For the dozens of good comments, there are always some bad ones. “Your shirt is too tight.” “You would look better with heels.” “You would look slimmer if…” “That color was a bold choice.” “Prints make you look bigger.” “Plus size can’t wear stripes.” and the list goes on…it is a long list. Note to crabby readers…your comments about me will never be harsher than my own thoughts. Why do people do this? Golden Rule, Folks. If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. As a sewing blogger, I have gained some confidence though. Sometime,s I even dare to say my outfit looks cute or nice. Baby Steps.
So let’s talk about goals for the next 365 days.
*Do more quality sewing. I do a lot of quick sews, well in the past I did a lot. I have greatly reduced the number of tests I am doing. I want to sew things on my schedule for what I want to sew.
*Learn new things. Master my fit issues ehm… pants, bras, etc. Somethings scare me to sew…Bras…tried it once and quit! Pants are a work in progress. For me, I need to realize my body isn’t a normal feminine shape. Most patterns account for hips and booty and I lack in both. But I am making huge strides in preparing to sew my own jeans!!
*Write at least 5 blog posts for designers or for blog tours. Always on the look out for blog tours!! Tag me if you start one. I want in!
*Test less, Upcycle more. I have seen several mentions lately that plus size upcycling isn’t as popular as smaller sizes. I do agree with this in a way, but I have been upcycling for YEARS! When I began sewing, I started by thrifting for anything with great fabrics! I made some cool stuff, now I have more sewing skills I should be putting to use! As a bonus, we are saving a little space in the landfills!
*Continue to be a positive influence online. I shouldn’t need to explain this one.
*Learn to say No!

If I haven’t lost ya yet, thanks for sticking around! This is going to be an awesome year and I can’t wait to update this post on my next Birthday.ย  Don’t forget to give my blog a follow and leave me a comment! ๐Ÿ™‚

Annabeth Sweatshirt

Do you love cuddly clothing when it starts to get cold outside? Sweatshirts, Hoodies, and all that jazz? Me too! 5oo4 has an answer to that issue for you! This is the AnnaBeth Sweatshirt! I am working on cutting out my second one because I need this in a hoodie version ASAP! First off, I love a Raglan style top! I typically colorblock the sleeves for an added pop of fun, but this fabric was all I needed to make it amazing. Speaking of colorblocking, this shirt can be colorblocked! You can do the side panels as a accent or the sleeves or both! There are no rules when you are sewing for yourself.

5oo4 Annabeth Sweatshirt 4x FBA (2) - Copy

In addition to the colorblocking options, you can add a kangaroo pocket to the front or hidden pockets if you choose to color block the side panels. 5oo4 is never shy when giving us options. Here is the entire list.

The Womenโ€™s Annabeth Top and Tunic Sweatshirt includes:

  • Raglan style sleeves
  • Solid or color-blocked options
  • Hidden front pocket or kangaroo pocket
  • Short or long sleeves that can be hemmed or finished with a band
  • Regular sweatshirt top length or tunic length with a lower hem in the back
  • Hem is finished with a band
  • Standard cuffs or a NEW thumbhole cuff option
  • Crewneck or cross over hood
  • Regular bodice or full bust adjustment (FBA) bodice
  • Sizes XXS โ€“ 5X (see the last image for yardage and size chart)
  • See the awesome video of all of our testerโ€™s designsย here!

5oo4 Annabeth Sweatshirt 4x FBA (6) - Copy

This shirt sewed up quickly and easily. I removed about 3 inches of length from the body of the shirt and 2 from the sleeves. After I made my shirt, the cuffs were sized slightly smaller to give a better fit. However, in my photos, you will notice my cuffs are folded in half compared to the original pattern. I always do this. I actually think it is a habit more than anything. I didn’t do a bicep adjustment as these sleeves are wide enough for me. If I planned to wear the hoodie over a bulkier shirt, I would add some room to the sleeve.

5oo4 Annabeth Sweatshirt 4x FBA (4) - Copy

Fabric time!! OOMMMGGGG Brushed Hacci Sweater knit is everything that makes me happy. Animal print always makes me very happy. Them together and I am sooooo in love! I picked this fabric up online from Ksews. You can find her online at a group called The Material Girls. She shops the fabric markets and resells to people who aren’t near the markets. This fabric has a slight flaw which was a run near the salvage. It is still usable, but it is expected when shopping these groups. They typically will point out flaws. I am happy that I have enough of this fabric left to make either a scarf or try making a beanie hat!
