Love Notions – Sabrina Slims Gets Updated

Remember a few days ago when I said I wanted to sort out some fit issues I have when making pants during the new year? Well I made a huge move in that direction with these pants! These are the Sabrina Slims from Love Notions and they are so comfortable! It is totally acceptable to feel like you are wearing pajamas at work when the pants look this good. This slim fit pattern has just released in the larger plus size range which is becoming the LN standard! The pattern fits up to size 32 and is loaded with options.

Let’s talk about getting a great fit. First off, Tami has worked really hard to put together a pants fitting guide to help. This comes automatically when you purchase the pattern. The fitting guide helps you to sort out issues and improve your fit. So let’s talk about my pants. By the measurement chart (hip measurement), I should be wearing a size 32. From experience I know this isn’t going to work for my body. You can look at me and see that I have next to no curves for hips or booty. I have all belly. So we are about to get really awkward and I am going to talk to you about some personal issues. I retook my measurements this time I went under my belly. Surprise! My measurement is 6 inches less! So let’s start there. I am now in size 24, but I need some belly room. First, I graded from the crotch point (size 24 line) up to the waist at size 28. I compared the measurement chart to my numbers to determine how many inches I needed to account for to fit my waist. I added a 1.5 inch full belly adjustment to the front of pattern piece only. Keep in mind that whatever number you use will get doubled. This is because you have one pattern piece for the front, but you will cut two of them. J So I added 1.5 inches to each side. Now I have gained about 4.5 inches in the front belly. I graded the back pant from the crotch point (size 24) to the waist (size 28). Now we have gained another inch! This will be plenty of room for my belly to fit comfortably.

The next issue I needed to address was extra fabric pooling at my knees on my fit muslin pants. This was a much easier fix. I needed to remove some height. This isn’t as direct as cutting fabric off the bottom of the pant legs. I removed 1 ½ inches from the thigh area of the pattern front and back pieces. I then removed 1 inch from just above the knee on both the front and back of the pattern. That pattern has notch marks to indicate where your hip and knees should be. Next I removed 1 inch from the 26 inch inseam cut line. Lastly, I removed 1.5 inches from the rise to get the waist band resting over my belly button. The fit is much better now! I know this seems like a lot of adjustment for a pattern that is so wonderful, but trust me. My body isn’t typical and well worth all these little adjustments to get a great fit. It is worth it. Plus once you get the fit nailed down, you are golden!

Ok let’s talk about fabric! Simply by Ti sponsored my fabric and shipping for this size increase. The pattern requires a stable knit or stretch woven with 20% stretch. Think “bottom weight fabrics.” I picked this great ponte print! It is a lighter weight ponte that I used for my muslin, but it is still nice. It is so comfortable and feels like I am wearing pajamas!  Go check out SBT for some fun prints and great solids. Ti also keeps tons of bra making supplies available and has a great deal on needles for sewing machines and sergers. I think I ordered 4 packs of 10 needles! They were only $2 and $3 each! Thank you, Ti, for the beautiful fabric for my finals.

5oo4 – Hack Attack is Back!

So I made this dress a few weeks ago, but hadn’t gotten the chance to photograph it. I sewed this dress up because I was going out to dinner and wanted to look nice. I know I am not the only one who decides at the last minute “I have nothing to wear.” The struggle is real, folks! Finally, I have gotten some photos and now I am writing up a blog post to share with you all and tell you how I got my look! It is sorta a hack…Sorta.

Do you know what pattern hacking is? Do you do it? Are you scared to try it? Pattern hacking can be a lot of different things. It can be as “basic” as using a pattern as a base for a new garment or as “extra” as mashing several patterns together to be your dream garment. Sometimes I love one part of a garment, but need something different for the rest of it. This is all pattern hacking and this year, I have done a lot of it. I think pattern hacking is the easiest way to fill your wardrobe with well fitting items without trying out tons of different patterns.  I use to be really scared of hacking mostly because sometimes I mess up and waste good fabric. It happens! Move on and try again. Luck was on my side with this hack though…or maybe I had an insider tip…

Gloria and Erica mash (1)

Psst: I had an insider tip. I knew that the Gloria top bodice was a perfect fit for the EricaSkirt! The Gloria peplum in its original form is my favorite top. I wear with with leggings and boots a lot, but it is also perfect with jeans and flip flops in the summer. I love that it is fitted through the bust and has a skirt attached with a seam just above the fuller part of my belly. I prefer this look on shirt as I don’t like anything that is tight on my stomach. I love that it comes with tons of options, but I also love that it is versatile with different fabrics. I have used Liverpool, Double Brushed Poly, Interlock Twist Yarn, and even a heavier Rayon Spandex fabric.

So I printed only the FBA Front Bodice, the Back bodice, Sleeves and Neckband from the Gloria and then printed just the skirt portion of the Ericaskirt from the Mambo collection. I chose the lower neckline of the front bodice and the long sleeves with cuffs. I actually wish I would have removed another half inch from these sleeves.  I used a short length for the skirt because I knew I was wearing my dress over leggings or skinny jeans.

This beautiful paisley print fabric is from Sly Fox Fabrics. I ordered it last year, I believe and I held on to it way to long. Sometimes I have a hard time actually cutting into fabric I love. I am certain I am not alone in this, but trust me, the fabric isn’t going to run out. Cut the Fabric! Make the Clothes! Wear the Fabric! This is a single brushed poly.

Assembly:

Assemble bodice as usual. Follow the pattern directions if you aren’t sure how to make a basic top. Sew front and back bodices together at the shoulder seams. Sew sleeves in on the flat. Stitch along the sleeves and body of your top. Add neckbands and arm bands. 🙂 Bodice done! Now the Skirt.  Stitch up the skirt side seams. Place the bodice inside the skirt matching right sides together and clip along the bottom of bodice/top of skirt. Stitch together. At this point, I have serged my entire dress. Now you can top stitch around the neck band if you prefer. Hemming your bottom skirt with finish your look nicely!

TA-DA! Time to show off your new look!

Laundry Day Tee – Updated

The Laundry Day Tee from Love Notions has re-released and it is even more fantastic than the original. First off, it includes sizes 4x and 5x now. The rereleased pattern was redrafted in Love Notions newer design software. Additionally, the arm/sleeve was adjusted for a better overall fit. As a bonus, assembly directions were simplified!

During the retest, I made two versions of the Laundry Day Tee. I made the tunic version first. I have been holding on to the pastel stripes for way too long because I wanted them to be something awesome. I also only had two yards of the print and this fabric was thin, which basically meant I could make a shirt. I used nearly all of the usable fabric for this top. The design has a lot of swing to it, which I actually love. I used the short sleeve option with the scoop neckline…spring will be here soon!

My second top I made sleeveless! I did this for two reasons. I wanted to show another option for this pattern and I wanted to compared the tank to another pattern I really love. I actually like the first of both patterns, but appreciate that this under arm area is higher than the other. So this is a 100% win in my book! I have wore this silky ITY version over leggings a few times since making it. I threw a cardigan over it to make in winter work appropriate. Again, this pattern sewed up quickly and easily.

The Laundry Day Tee has been around for a good while, so I knew when the test popped up, I was on board with it! The top comes together quickly and has several of options to achieve your favorite fit!

Pattern pieces for 3 neckline styles: scoop, v-neck & cowl.

Three hem lengths: shirt, tunic & knee length dress.

Five sleeve lengths

Hi lo hem for the tunic and dress lengths

Today, I am sharing my latest Luna, which was a Christmas gift for Momma Mia. Momma Mia likes skirts and loves to wear clothes that don’t look like any of her friends. I can understand that, I feel the exact same way. My biggest nightmare would be showing up somewhere and someone is wearing the same shirt as me…no thanks! She also recently mentioned, she likes showing up wearing a new garment when she sees them. Ok, Momma, hint taken!

Luna Promo XXL Jessie Top (4)

The included options:

  • 2 lengths – “mini” (mid-thigh) and knee length
  • Fabric waistband that can be made with or without elastic.
  • Option for exposed elastic waistband
  • 3 cutting options – double fold, single fold (give two side seams), single layer (perfect for colorblocking!)
  • Finishing options – hem, bias tape, or FOE
  • sizes XXS-5X

Luna Promo XXL Jessie Top (2)

I chose the knee length hemmed version again and it fits perfectly on the 2 yard cut of fabric. This Liverpool floral print was picked up at Zink’s in Berlin with the intention of the Luna Skirt. I used the fold over waistband and slid an elastic through to help hold it in place. I love how Liverpool fabric has enough structure to create the perfect twirl effect! While taking these photos, the wind kept catching the fabric and creating a lovely look. I am sad my pictures had the weird shadow, lesson learned…Camera is still fairly new and I am still learning so bear with me.

Luna Promo XXL Jessie Top (3)

I couldn’t sew Momma Mia this pretty floral skirt without a matching shirt, especially when she has been asking for solid tops. This is the Jessie top and Momma Mia’s favorite. You have seen it many times here so I won’t talk you to death about it. This is the tunic length so she can also wear it was jeans or leggings. I love versatile clothing.  This fabric is double brushed poly from my stash. I am pretty sure it came from Sly Fox Fabrics.

Merry Christmas Momma Mia, I hope you love it!
