5oo4 Adventure Skort- An Update

I am back with another pattern update! I really love seeing so many designers updating their pattern sizing to be more inclusive. The Adventure Skort has been around awhile, but it now on their updated size chart which is thru a 5x! In addition to the size update, the Skort also has more than a shorts option now. You can run thru the lengthy list of EIGHT length options! Additionally, there are 3 options for your preferred gusset. There are also 2 skirt lengths and 4 waistband options!

Here is the listed rundown of all the *need to know* details.

• Women’s sizes XXS-5XL
• Two lengths – a short athletic length and a knee-length
• The leggings include options for no gusset, triangle gusset, or full diamond gusset
• The leggings have 8 length options: 1.25″, 3″, 5″ and 7″ inseams, pedal pusher, capri, ankle, and long
• 4 Rise options – extra low/maternity, low, mid, and high
• Waistband options include a knit band, band with 2″ elastic, yoga band, or a contour band

I decided to make the knee length skirt option over capri length pants. I wanted the cute look of ‘sorta sporty’ but also “super comfy.” I used Liverpool for my skirt with the elastic band. My hot pink capris are double brushed poly. I used the full gusset option. I did a full belly adjustment on the pants and used the 5x waist and graded to the 4x for the hips.

This pattern sews so so quickly! After printing and cutting, I would say assembly for the entire thing was around an hour. Perfect when you don’t want to spend long hours on a project and you would rather get to the fun of just wearing it.

I knew I was going to need a new top to wear with my Adventure Skort! I had one issue though, if you can believe it, I had NO fabric to match this colors of the skirt. I thought I would wear it with my hot pink Virginia Tank Top, but I looked like I was channeling my inner elf. As the release deadline was approaching, I headed off to Joanns where I found this bold green color. I used the newly updated Easy Tee pattern. The Easy Tee is hands down my most used Tee Shirt pattern and that is because it has a TON of options. Top, Tunic Dress, pockets, hood, curved hem, bands, SO MANY CHOICES!! My green Tee is the curved hem in a 4x FBA.

5oo4 Outfit – Gloria & Diane

I started the day with wanting to make my mom a new Gloria top. She has a few Gloria dresses already, so a top would make a nice change up. I added 1.5 inches to the length of the peplum top to make it a wee bit longer. It is an easy adjustment. You can either measure down the desired length from the bottom of your pattern piece or split the pattern thru the middle and add your length there. Either way works. Adding to the bottom will make your skirt slightly wider at the bottom and adding to the middle will maintain the same angle at the sides because you will just reblend the side seam to smooth out the extra length. 

I love the Gloria peplum myself and I have several in my own wardrobe. This pattern is well drafted and comes together easily. It is very straight forward! Actually, I think it took longer to cut the pattern and fabric than to make the top! I certainly call that a win! Momma Mia is wearing the FBA bodice with peplum skirt. Her sleeves are elbow length, and this is the high scoop neck.  Like so many other patterns from 5oo4, this pattern has several options. Here is the list.

Since the Gloria top is such a quick sew, Momma Mia needed a pair of pants! She gets an entire outfit this time. I made her the Diane joggers in a red scuba fabric. Everyone needs bold red statement pants, rights? The Diane Joggers were one of the first pants I ever sewed for myself so I was pretty familiar with the construction and knew these pants would be a good choice for the fabric. We wanted the straight hemmed legs as it would be the dressier option to look nice with the Gloria peplum. I also used the encased elastic waistband.

Here are all the options for the Diane joggers.

• 3 rise heights (low/maternity, mid, and high)
• Shorts, Capri, and Long cut lengths
• 4 leg finishes – cuffed, hemmed, drawstring, or elastic
• Information for both hemming and using bands (hello no hemming!)
• 6 waistband options – Encased elastic, drawstring, Knit, Yoga Foldover, Contour, Maternity (underbelly)

Ummm Pockets are essential, correct? This pattern has patch pockets which I love! I used my regular sewing machine and a zig zag stitch to sew them in place. As you can see, I use zig zag stitching for all my finishes. Also thrilled to FINALLY have my sewing machine sewing correctly!!

Momma Mia picked both of these fabrics up at Zinck’s in Berlin Ohio. The print is Liverpool and the red solid is Scuba. For her top I sewed an XL graded to a 2X and her pants are a Small Back/ Medium Front waist graded to a small in the legs. We have found this really gives her the best fit! Guest Blogging and some pocket hacking

I *think* I have sewn 7 Gloria tops! One of my favorite ones is missing from the college below. I can’t locate a picture of it. 😦 This is one of my most loved patterns. I love that it is loaded with options on its own, but it is super hackable!

Today I am sharing a new hack and it is for Momma Mia! You will notice she isn’t in lock down and was able to be in the pictures. I took this photos a few weeks ago before house arrest! So let’s talk about what I did…

First off, this isn’t your typical Gloria bodice. I added 3 inches to the length of the bodice as Momma Mia requested it to attach to the skirt closer to her hips. That was easy to do by just lengthening the bodice. For the skirt, I used the long hi lo skirt option. I love that the hi lo shows off her stylish boots while still swaying as the wind blows. She wanted long sleeves and the higher neck line. I was able to make her dress exactly how she wanted it and she was so pleased with it.

My fabric is a Liverpool base and these flowers are so pretty. I picked it up at Zinck’s Fabric Warehouse just before Christmas. What you can’t see from these pictures is when I got the fabric home, there was a large section of fabric that the ink had been smeared/discolored so I had to do some fancy cutting. I ended up having to put a seam down the back of the skirt in order to get this skirt length. It all worked out in the end, though it was super annoying at the time.

Luna Twirl Skirt

Today, I am sharing my latest Luna, which was a Christmas gift for Momma Mia. Momma Mia likes skirts and loves to wear clothes that don’t look like any of her friends. I can understand that, I feel the exact same way. My biggest nightmare would be showing up somewhere and someone is wearing the same shirt as me…no thanks! She also recently mentioned, she likes showing up wearing a new garment when she sees them. Ok, Momma, hint taken!

The included options:

• 2 lengths – “mini” (mid-thigh) and knee length
• Fabric waistband that can be made with or without elastic.
• Option for exposed elastic waistband
• 3 cutting options – double fold, single fold (give two side seams), single layer (perfect for colorblocking!)
• Finishing options – hem, bias tape, or FOE

I chose the knee length hemmed version again and it fits perfectly on the 2 yard cut of fabric. This Liverpool floral print was picked up at Zink’s in Berlin with the intention of the Luna Skirt. I used the fold over waistband and slid an elastic through to help hold it in place. I love how Liverpool fabric has enough structure to create the perfect twirl effect! While taking these photos, the wind kept catching the fabric and creating a lovely look. I am sad my pictures had the weird shadow, lesson learned…Camera is still fairly new and I am still learning so bear with me.

I couldn’t sew Momma Mia this pretty floral skirt without a matching shirt, especially when she has been asking for solid tops. This is the Jessie top and Momma Mia’s favorite. You have seen it many times here so I won’t talk you to death about it. This is the tunic length so she can also wear it was jeans or leggings. I love versatile clothing.  This fabric is double brushed poly from my stash. I am pretty sure it came from Sly Fox Fabrics.

A little bit of Luna… Mambo Style!

Surprise! Did you think we were finished with Mambo No. 5 out of 4 style? Nope, we have one more to go! The Luna… I know. I know. Luna wasn’t one of Mambo’s girls, but she plays nice with the Mambo girls! Also she is free and fast! Momma Mia got in on the Luna action and got her very first full circle skirt!

Since I have just made Momma Mia a Royal Blue double brushed poly Jessie dress, I knew we were about to take advantage of it! The DBP is a perfect match for the blue in the Chevron Liverpool I had on hand. Both fabrics are from Stitchin’ Pretties. I sewed the knee length skirt for Momma Mia and cut on the double fold so there are no side seams. I used the Liverpool fabric to make her waistband as well. For the edge finish…miles of hemming. That is how it is with circle skirts. I don’t mind hemming Liverpool fabric though as it has a nice weight and doesn’t fight me! Here is the full info on the options.

A little bit of Tina is what I see

Day Four – Mambo No. 4.

Today I am sharing skirt No. four of my Mambo Collection. This is Tina and she is uber cute and flirty! Does it even get better than polka dots and ruffles?? Seriously, that combo isn’t one I wear frequently because it has been reserved for overly girlie folks and I am not that by any means. However, the dark navy background color saved it from being too much. Like all the others, this skirt is made with a structured knit and features a high waist band.

This is the most blue I have seen this fabric look. Must be the natural light bringing it out!

My options for Tina are a little different that all my other skirts! This time I went long. I decided to make the Midi length and add the hem ruffle. I had 3 yards of this fabric that I have been saving and wanted to use as much of it as I could! Typically, I would add a ruffle so I didn’t have to hem a finished edge, but this fabric stitched so nicely I hemmed my ruffle! I added patch pockets to the front of my skirt as well. Funny Story… I am short and height adjusted my pattern at the proper line, but I didn’t account for my shortness when adding from my pockets.  When I FULLY ASSEMBLED my skirt and tried it on, I could barely reach my pockets! Only my fingers tips could reach them. Oops! Seam Ripper to the rescue! I removed the waist band and then 1.5 inches from the top of my skirt, reattached the band and all is good now! So don’t be like Sequoia, double check the pocket placement sooner rather than later! I also mixed up the waist band on Tina, this is the cross front band. It is cute! I think it looks nice over my light colored tank with my cardigan. Don’t forget all the options for Tina and the rest of Mambo are interchangeable!

Gloria Dress for Momma Mia

I am back with another 5oo4 make. Again this time, it is for Momma Mia. I am working on filling her closet up lately. This time, I volunteered her for a Gloria even though she typically doesn’t like the look of a peplum. She doesn’t like the seam across her belly while I personally love it. The Gloria pattern comes with my favorite peplum top and I have 4 of them. Not that 4 is too many, I am just spreading the love out a bit. Plus Momma Mia likes new dresses and she already had this awesome fabric. So let’s talk about her latest dress in her closet.

This is Gloria from 5oo4 patterns. It comes packed with options so Momma Mia had a few choices to make. First she agreed to a peplum, but I talked her into the short skater dress because there was enough fabric! I mean, why leave a 15 inch scrap of fabric when it can become a dress, right? Next, she wanted the elbow sleeves which is normal for her, but she was excited about the split sleeve option. These sleeves really only take about 10 extra minutes to hem, top stitch then attach to the bodice plus they are just a little fun detail.  As always, she prefers the high scoop neckline.

This fabric is Liverpool. I love that Liverpool gives a little bit of structure to the skirt portion, but is still comfortable in the bodice and stretches with movement. It doesn’t really wrinkle and washes well. As I am typing this up, I am actually wearing a Gloria made of Liverpool that I made more than a year ago. It still looks as nice as it did when I made it! It really gives a dressy appearance to an outfit. This Liverpool came from Zinck’s Fabric Warehouse in Berlin, Ohio. This print is fun for spring in summer, but I think she can also wear some tights and be good to go for fall! I visit a few times a year and we picked this one up in spring after they did a huge stocking.

Sewing a Wardrobe Capsule

So I am finally ready to start sharing the Business Causal Wardrobe Capsule I have been working on. Both of these items were made as part of the #GetawaywithALD capsule challenge. The object was to create several items of clothing that work together as part of a closet capsule collection for a summer getaway. I have no plans to get away this summer, so I am sewing for a business casual work setting. Typically, a capsule is for a minimalist. If you follow my blog you probably can assume I have an overly full closet…several closets, dressers, and a random clothing rack in the basement. It is a safe bet, I am not a minimalist by any means, but I really do like when I can mix and match outfits to extend my clothing options. My work wardrobe is always lacking in interchangeable garments. So let’s start with these two pieces.

My love for the Diane Joggers continues! This time, they aren’t part of my Copy Cat series. This time, I just wanted some fun floral print pants. I am so happy that I have finally dialed in my fit for these pants. Now I can just grab the pattern and start cutting. It takes me less than 2 hours to cut and sew these pants. Perfect for last minute wardrobe needs and instant gratification sewing! I think these get a little faster with each pair I make.

 

Again, I chose to make a 4x waist and graded down to a 3x leg. I love that now these pants stay up without elastic sewn into them. Properly fitting pants are so comfortable. It is pretty amazing what a difference proper fit makes in overall comfort of any clothing. I typically hate wearing dress pants, but these pants are so wearable. If you are wondering, I do consider amazing floral print pants to be dress pants! This Liverpool fabric called Blythe, is available here.

I decided to sew up a new tank top to wear with my floral pants. I used a light blue solid double brushed poly and the Virginia Tank pattern to make it happen. I have used this pattern a dozen times at this point. I am nearly certain I could sew it with my eyes clothes. It takes me about 40 minutes to cut, sew and finish. The most time consuming part is clipping and sewing the neck and arm bands in place. I love this pale blue color and it will pair up with so many things in my closet. I very rarely sew anything in solids, but sometimes they are necessary. I have now made several solid tanks! I love having tanks that fit me properly and in every color I need. As a plus size person, store bought tanks tend to be wider in the body, but the same length as smaller sizes. Let’s be real for a minute, “This girl” doesn’t wear crop tops. Honestly, I rarely wearing a shirt that is considered ‘top length.” I hate my stomach, I especially hate how it looks peeking out of the bottom of a shirt. We all have body issues and this is BY FAR my biggest one. When I make a tank top, I can customize the length for my exact preferences.

I ordered both of these fabric from Amelia Lane Designs. This floral print is called Blythe and it is Liverpool and so pretty. I love that Liverpool is a knit, but has some structure. By structure, I mean that it won’t hang limply over my body. I continue to be obsessed with floral print and I just don’t know if that will ever end! The solid light blue is double brushed poly. I love DBP and make the majority of my clothes from it. It is nearly perfect for everything except waist bands and things that need structure! Amelia Lane Designs stocks several solid DBP’s and you can view them here.

Peggy Pencil Skirt

Peggy Pencil Skirt and how to style it.

So I made this skirt last month, took photos, and hated them. Before taking the photos, I really did struggle with how to wear the two things together. The shirt I was wearing didn’t flatter my skirt at all. The proportion was wrong. My skirt was long, my shirt was long. I tried to tie it to one side, but there wasn’t enough fabric. I tried to fake tuck it by folding it up, but it looked bad.  A pencil skirt really isn’t overly flattering on my body. I have odd shape for a plus size gal. I have zero hip curve and zero booty. I am round especially from the side view. I am described very much an apple shape.

According the Wiki, if you have an apple–shaped body, then your body is “top heavy,” meaning you have a wide torso, broad shoulders, and a full bust, waist, and upper back. Apple–shaped bodied women also tend to have thinner arms, legs, and hips, and tend to gain weight at their waistlines.

This sounds pretty accurate, except I also have large arms. Hence the Full Bicep Adjustment I am always harping about.

Pencil skirts can be a little tricky to wear as an apple shape. I strongly feel that curvy hips make pencil skirts look way better. Also being a little taller helps, which I am not. At 5’1, wearing shoes, I am no where near being considered tall, but it is ok. I feel that sometimes you just have to do with it.

So I ended up styling my pencil skirt with a tank top. By exposing my arms, this already feels way less stuffy. Here are two photos side by side. I am wearing the same skirt obviously, but with different styles of top. You will notice the blue top makes me look very rectangular. This isn’t a very good look for most people and definitely not the look I want. The pink tank top exposes my shoulders and arms and is also shorter in length. The shorter length helps to break my body up into proportions. Overall, the look of the tank top and pencil skirt appeals to me more. The lower neckline of the pink tank, draws attention upward, hopefully making me appear taller. Also notice where the skirt is hitting lengthwise in both photos. The blue top outfit, the skirt is landing at the widest part of my calves while in the pink top, I have hiked my skirt up a bit, exposing more leg. Again, creating the illusion of being taller. I think that also with the shorter tank top, I could also wear a longer cardigan because the tank top would still create a line of proportion and give my outfit balance.

As always the size range is up to 5x. I am wearing 3x in a Liverpool fabric. There are two fit options for this skirt. I made the regular pencil skirt, but there is also a body con fit. I also made the back vent for easy when walking. There are 3 length options and I made the knee length version, not height adjusted.
