A little bit of Luna… Mambo Style!

Surprise! Did you think we were finished with Mambo No. 5 out of 4 style? Nope, we have one more to go! The Luna… I know. I know. Luna wasn’t one of Mambo’s girls, but she plays nice with the Mambo girls! Also she is free and fast! Momma Mia got in on the Luna action and got her very first full circle skirt!

Since I have just made Momma Mia a Royal Blue double brushed poly Jessie dress, I knew we were about to take advantage of it! The DBP is a perfect match for the blue in the Chevron Liverpool I had on hand. Both fabrics are from Stitchin’ Pretties. I sewed the knee length skirt for Momma Mia and cut on the double fold so there are no side seams. I used the Liverpool fabric to make her waistband as well. For the edge finish…miles of hemming. That is how it is with circle skirts. I don’t mind hemming Liverpool fabric though as it has a nice weight and doesn’t fight me! Here is the full info on the options.

• 3 cutting options – double fold, single fold (give two side seams), single layer (perfect for colorblocking!)

A little bit of Monica in my Life

Next up, I am sharing Monica! This is my third skirt from the collection and perhaps it is my favorite! I love the pleated detailing on Monica. It gives a wonderful fullness to the skirt without added bulk and shockingly, I find pleating way easier than gathering. Plus with pleats, everything is even because the marking is included in the pattern. No fussing with adjusting gathers. Monica, like all of the other skirts in this collection, features a high rise waist and sews up fairly quickly and easily. All of the options in this collection are interchangeable. That includes pockets, waist bands, and suspenders.

I chose the mini length of Monica. I height adjusted 2 inches for my 5’1 frame and my skirt hits just at the top of my knee. I already have plans to make this as a maxi length. It is so pretty and very comfortable! I added the waist ties and made a bow at my hip. I also added in seam pockets because I don’t understand why people don’t want pockets in their clothing. 🙂

This skirt pattern requires a stable knit so of course I had to use some of my precious Liverpool. I chose this vibrant hot pink background print for my skirt! I love the brightness of the colors. Even though it is fall here, I still need bright colors! This beautiful Liverpool is from Zinck’s in Berlin. I picked it up early in the summer and I have been hoarding it for awhile. I thought I would make a blazer with it,  but it makes a perfect skirt! Don’t worry, I still have plenty left for a cropped jacket!

Remember this top from Monday’s post when I said I would be sharing it later in the week? Yeap, another Easy Tee with a slight hack. Only a slight adjustment was made here. I cut the pattern at the scoop neckline and only added a band to the “scooped out” part in front. I then cut the neckband length for the crew neck shirt option and attached it like binding instead of bands. This allowed me to tuck the raw edges inside and then top stitch them in place. Now that I know how this fits, I would change a few things. 1. Start the bonus neckband a little lower so it isn’t right against my throat. 2. Maybe add some sort of stabilizer in the band to keep it from being sooo stretchy. and 3. Do better about top stitching. HOC Virginia Tank

So this is my second show and share from Sly Fox Fabrics week! I purposely ordered 2 different 1 yard cuts with the plan to make some great tank tops! I love wearing tank tops around the house, under shirts when it is freezing cold out, and of course, when I am mixing up my prints! I spent some time recently perusing Pinterest to come up with some trendy fashion ideas for my plus size self. If I am super honest with all of you, I spend a lot of time perusing Pinterest for sewing ideas. I have been making an effort to pin more and screenshot less. Do you follow me on Pinterest? Here is my link. While there, I discovered I really needed a black and white horizontal striped shirt. I wear stripes…a lot of stripes, but I didn’t have one single shirt that was all stripes. I ordered this amazing black and white double brushed poly print from Sly Fox Fabrics. I  knew it would be perfect for my plan!

I paired my Black and White tank with the super sassy, super girly, super shortie short skirt. I have had this skirt in my drawer for no less than five years. I picked it up at the Goodwill because I loved the print. I have not worn it one time. Not one single time. As a matter of fact, I had to cut that plastic pricing marker off to take pics. Someday, I hope to wear super pretty skirts for more than photos but the truth is, I don’t know how to sit like a lady. 🙂 I also wore this black belt that I have had for years and black suede boots with this outfit.

Puppy Playtime!

Why it works: Black and White small scale stripes with the graphic print of the skirt which also contains black and white. I love how the black boots and belt don’t compete with the fabrics instead they compliment.

I used the Virginia pattern from 5 out of 4. I have also made myself and Momma Mia matching Virginia maxis from this pattern. She also has a few knee length tank dresses in her stash from this pattern. You can see those dresses here. It is a great pattern to meet some needs in the ‘basics’ sections of my closet.

HOC Week 3

Their size range is from doll size through size 30. For reference in BSD patterns, I wear a 24 bust, which is about a 3x in RTW.

One of my favorite color blocked BSD patterns is this Amelia! You can read about my original Amelia here.

I made this dress last spring and I still adore these prints today! The lined bodice keeps everything in place and makes it comfortable to wear anywhere. Plus, I do love anything with an Empire Waist.

So why does this work? The black in the floral and the polka dots bring the two different prints together. Again, we have to look at the scale here. Large random floral design, smaller organized polka dots.

This dress is sized from 00-30 and it comes with an included Full Bust Adjustment!

Ladies Pattern

Another one of my absolute favorite Bella Sunshine Designs patterns is this one…

The Apple Cardigan. This was actually my second ever blog post! You can read about it here. 

So why does the floral work with the pink stripes? It all comes down to the color and scale. More than a year later I am still wearing it! Sometimes I wear it with my favorite camo slim fit pants “because camo is basically a solid.” 🙂 We will talk about that in a few days. 🙂

How fun is this combo? This is one of those outfits where my mom said, “It looks ok, for you.” 🙂 So first off, this shirt! This gorgeous peplum is my absolute fabric pattern when I make it in Liverpool! I love the structured look of it. This Liverpool print is from Stitchin’ Pretties! There big sale is still going on for about one more week. I have made several other Gloria Tops and you can see them here.

This amazing cardigan is the Ladies Circle Cardi from Rebecca Page. Here is the link. First off, don’t let the looks of this pattern laid out on paper freak you out when you see it. It looks a little weird, but it works out. Because I sew in the largest size offered, I wasn’t able to cut my pattern on the fold. If you look super close, you can see I have a seam down the back. I worked hard to match it up! Anyhow, I love this. I actually wore it twice in the last couple days. This fabric is a Hacci from Fabric Mart. I picked it up months ago at a super discount price! I have made the short length, hemmed, and 3/4 sleeves. Here are all the pattern options:

• 2 length options (short or long),
• 3 hem options (plain, band or ruffle)
• 3 sleeve options (sleeveless, ¾ and full length).

So let’s talk about why the prints work:

They are both super fun prints. Even though the both have crazy zig-zag stripes they are just different enough to stand apart. The common color between them, Black, helps pull them together. Imagine if the blue and black remained the same color, but the cardigan changes to white and green. This would give it a totally different look and throws off the color balance. Three’s company, Four’s a crowd. 🙂

HOC + SP + 5oo4= Happy Momma Mia

This is the second post for the House of Curves #Breakallthedamnrules series! Are you partaking? Have you joined in the fun at the Facebook group? I started a post for everyone to share their makes!! Join us!

Today Momma Mia is up! I will admit to you guys, she doesn’t mix prints, she doesn’t do bold, and she will admit that I dress a little ‘loud.’ She will often remark, “That will look fine for you.” I don’t know if that is a good thing. I just laugh. 🙂 On the flip side, she likes when I make her clothes. I told her if she wants clothing this month, she is mixing it up. Obviously, she agreed.

AND….She is smiling!!!

So this is the Easy Tee from 5outof4. I have made 3 of them for myself! You can see them here. I also used Stitchin’ Pretties fabric for all of those tops! So this top is just slightly different than the orginal pattern. I would like to say that the striped color blocking was well planned out, but I messed up. I cut the pattern on the wrong lines, the sleeveless version lines. They are clearly marked, but I was sleep cutting, I guess. So ooops Momma Mia, you are getting some stripes. She was actually ok with it. I had already talked her into stripes in her hood anyhow.

So here she is wearing the hooded version with 3/4 sleeves. If you have never sewn a 5oo4 pattern you may not know they have loads of options. Probably more options per pattern than anyone I Have sewn up. Here is the list for this one.

Options include:

• Shirt, Tunic, Short dress, and Knee Length Dress options
• Hemmed or Band options for the shirt and tunic
• Curved hem option that is in between the shirt and tunic lengths
• Pockets for the dress options
• Maternity pattern piece
• Optional waist tie and breast pocket
• Crew neck, scoop neck, or v-neck
• Hoods for both the crew and the scoop neck versions
• Cuffs for all sleeve lengths (sleeveless, short, 3/4, long, and extra long), including thumbhole cuffs if you want them!

So why does it work? Again, scale and color here. The floral print is mid sized and has hints of blue gray in it. Imagine if I had used an orange or yellow stripe… no good! Also compare the tone of colors. Darker plum with darker gray- here that works. Grays tend to play well with a lot of colors so they are easy to use.

What if I wanted to pair a dark plum with green. I could totally use a darker green or even a mid tone, but neon be a little trickier. Look at the two shades of green here. Now swap one for poison green… eeep! Color paint palettes are awesome for matching colors!

Do you ever do this? Google color schemes? I do it when I want to paint at home, but also when I make clothing!

Next time you go to Lowe’s pick up a few paint swatches! 🙂 I dare you to use them!
