I am so glad I was included in the Love Notions test group when they began expanding sizes! I have loved each of the items I have sewn and my latest is no exception! Their new size chart is inclusive up to 5x. I made a 4x FBA graded to a 5x. The Constellation Hoodie is absolute perfection and I will be wearing it a lot this fall and winter!
I chose the curved hem hoodie option. I loved the look of my very first thumb hole cuffs and was impressed by how easy they were and how neat they looked when finished! I have to admit, I was absolutely exhausted by all the sewing I did the weekend I made this one and had to force myself not to just do basic simple cuffs. Now that I survived the sewing weekend, I am glad I pushed through. The hoodie has been worth every single stitch!

I love when hoods are a 3 piece construction. It gives an overall better feel.
I was thrilled when I was assigned this test the Constellation and told that Sly Fox Fabrics was hosting my fabric for the test! I have been shopping SFF since I began making clothing and knew I was going to get some fabulous fabric! Best part of it was, I got to pick exactly what I wanted. The pattern called for a stable knit and I was leaning hard towards French Terry. I knew it would be extra soft and comfy cozy and perfect for a hoodie! For my main fabric, I decided on Baby French Terry fabric and the print is called Reverie. The website lists several coordinates and I choose Heather Sage, also a Baby French Terry. If you don’t know about Sly Fox Fabric, they always list coordinating fabrics with listings, they ship in one business day, and they include a color catcher with every order! This fabric sewed up perfectly. I loved every stitch I made. Go check out their amazing fabrics! You will love anything you order!

The last few days I have been sewing up a storm! Actually the last 2 weeks, but I spent a 3 day weekend at a family sewing get together and had such a great time! I worked on everything from clothing to quilts and even had a request to sew a pair of bandless ear muffs. Think shower caps for your ears! Nope, not this girl! For the weekend count I finished a dress, a hoodie, 2 cardigans, 2 skirts and 14 quilt blocks. We were super productive and even cut out pieces for 42 quilt blocks each for 4 people while laughing, talking, and eating. This is our second get together this year! Happy Monday Funday, Friends! Today, I am sharing an awesome cardigan with you. I have made a few Eleanor Cardigans over the past year, but I think this one is my favorite! Wanna know the reason?? This fabric is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Hacci sweater knit is everything I love in fabric. Soft, cozy, and easy to sew. I ordered 3 yards of it from Stitchin’ Pretties and it is called Kathleen. As I was finishing up my cardigan, Momma Mia *may* have shown some interest in having something made as well. She lucked out this time, I was able to cut hers with only a quarter inch of fabric left at the last sleeve. Talk about a close call! So once again, #whatmommawantsmommagets !

So let’s talk about the Eleanor Cardigan. It is from 5 out of 4 patterns and has tons of options. Momma Mia is wearing the mid-thigh length and I am as well, only mine was shortened two inches. Both of us have the slimmer sleeve option and I hemmed all edges instead of banding. I really did not have fabric for that! Remember I only had 1/4 of an inch to spare. 🙂 After cutting and without adding the front bands, I can sew this basic version up in about 30 minutes! I love speed sewing. I love instant gratification projects! I sewed my cardigan on Friday of Sewing weekend and Momma Mia’s was made Sunday morning!

Momma Mia loves the Jessie Dress, so I sewed her one to match her new Eleanor Cardigan. She has been asking for solid items for months so she can mix and match things. I have been dragging my feet, but I really am a busy sewist! We both need solids in our closets, but I don’t love sewing with solids. I am usually drawn to bright bold prints, but when you get a great color, it makes a difference! Speaking of great color, isn’t this Royal Blue awesome? Again, this one is from Stitchin’ Pretties! At first touch, I loved the weight of them DBP. It wasn’t a thin wimpy fabric that clings in all the places if you know what I mean! With my 3 yards of Kathleen, I received one yard of this Royal Blue and I knew I was going to need a lot more!! I can make myself a tank top from yard, but I need a little more for a proper shirt! I ordered 2 more yards and thanks to Laura’s super fast shipping, I received my fabric 2 days later! Don’t forget, I will talk about my shirt later this week!
Back to the Jessie Dress…It recently got an update and now includes a full bust adjustment. I wanted to sew her a dress during the update, but ran out of time. I love that 5oo4 has been updating some of their pattern with this. It really it helpful and it really does save me the work! Momma Mia’s new dress has long sleeves and a scooped front neckline. I free hand cut this neckline as she didn’t want it at the normal “scoop” level. I just had to remeasure the opening and band that size of band for it. She never wants a scoop neck in the front. We planned to add the criss cross detailing that is normally at the back of Jessie to the front, but she liked this one as is. Her dress length was determined by the length on 1 yard of fabric I had. I cut her sleeves from the leftovers of my top.

This is my first blog post with photos from my NEW camera! Dang what a difference in quality and color! It will take me some time to figure it all out, but I am looking forward to learning! A few weeks ago, I was part of testing the Sally Skirt from 5 out of 4. Somehow in the chaos of my life, I forgot to write up my blog post and share. So here I am, sharing both skirts I made! Today is a two for one day! Both Momma Mia and I got new skirts!
The Sally skirt is a seriously fast sew! You can use knit or woven fabric for the skirt. It comes with a yoga style waistband and an optional knotted band as well. The pattern includes large pocket because…well, pockets are life! I made both of these skirts at knee length, but the pattern comes in maxi length also. As always, 5 out of 4 comes with inclusive sizing up to 5x.
First up, I sewed myself a skirt. I made the 5x skirt. I choose the knee length skirt this time which is unusual for me! I was feeling brave this day. I also was thinking the knee length would be super cute with my brown boots this fall!
I chose this fabric because it looks like fall. The colors are a little rustic looking, but the hints of blue warm it up a bit. This print is a double brushed poly that I got from Sew Blessed Fabrics.
Momma Mia also got a skirt too! I tried out a knot waistband for her because I hadn’t made one yet and it was a fun option. It sewed fairly easily even as my first time. If you are nervous about it, don’t worry… 5oo4 Sewing School has a video! Laura always does a great job explaining and showing how to do things! She also got pockets!
This awesome swim fabric came from Stitchin’ Pretties. Yep, you read that right! I used swim fabric for this skirt! Swim sews up so neatly and quickly. It even has a nice weight for a skirt. The neon green polka dot print is super fun especially since Momma Mia likes neon and green is her favorite color. I was able to make her skirt from a 1 yard cut I had originally ordered for making under roos! I changed my mind when this skirt pattern went into testing! Now I need to make her a neon green top to wear with her new Sally!
Since this pattern is part of the basics line it includes line drawings, photos and videos where needed. It is intended to be a great starter project, but also a great base for making things your own. I can see adding a wider flare, adding a ruffle, or even a lacey trim to this pattern very easily to change the look. Even a high low hem would be a fun hack and easy to achieve. Jessica shared on the 5oo4 blog, how to turn it into a skort, which I plan to try as I wear shorts under all my skirts anyhow!

Here is another outfit that got lost before it got blogged. I shared with you the first time I sewed up the St. Tropez Swing pattern for Momma Mia here. She loved that one and wears it frequently. Her one complaint was that her hair would get tangled in the button at the back. I can relate and my hair is only half as long as hers. She asked if I would make her another one without a button. Actually, if I remember correctly, she asked if I could make her another one before the weekend, removing the button, so she could wear it to West Virginia in 3 days. She really is good at sneaking in rush orders. So of course, I agreed, because #Whatmommawantsmommagets.
So really the only pattern piece I needed to adjust is the back yoke. I needed to make this one solid piece of fabric thus removing the need for a button and loop closure. I took my pattern piece and added 1/2 inch to only the part that extends to the center back. Next, I used my newly altered pattern piece to cut the back yoke on the fold…TA-DA one solid piece of fabric – no need for buttons! Now you can sew your St. Tropez Swing as usual skipping all steps involved in the button closure process.

I am happy to confess that this dress took much less time than the first one I made. I think that one took like 8 hours. This one came together much quicker because I had a better idea of what I was doing and I am way more comfortable with knits. I even made my own binding tape to match this time! I sized down to a XL Bust, XXL Waist and an L hip. This made her dress a little less flowy and not as full. I wasn’t concerned about downsizing since I had already sewn this pattern once and it was a bit too big. Plus this time, I used a brushed poly knit which is more forgiving than woven.
I couldn’t let Momma Mia go on vacation without pants so I sewed up a quick pair of Molly pants from 5oo4. Remember our matching Puppy PJs? Yep! That was Molly! By changing the fabric and slimming down the legs, they no longer look like pajamas! We have really worked on dialing in a perfect fit for these and finally nailed it. She likes them fitted, but not tight. She wants them to ride high on her belly, but not have a baggy crotch. Elastic to keep them in place, but not tight elastic. Pockets because all pants should have pockets. #Whatmommawantsmommagets

It has been awhile since I sewed up a Reagan Raglan for myself. This pattern was actually one of my very first sewing pattern tests. I had no idea what I was doing, but thankfully, the BSD team didn’t kick me out. They really helped me along. I have really learned so much since then. I love going back to my roots, so to speak, and sewing up some Bella Sunshine Designs. I love that their clothing always fits, the size range is consistent and all newer patterns include an FBA.
Bella Sunshine Designs has a pattern range from kiddos to almost a 60 inch hip and bust. I am wearing a 24 bust with the included Full Bust Adjustment. My shirt is graded to a 28 at the waist and hip. I decided to make the tunic length shortened by one inch. I did a bicep adjustment of 1.5 inches for this pattern and this is a pretty standard adjustment for me. I used the scoop neckline, mostly because I stink at V necks, but I do like the scoop best.
Let’s talk fabric. How fun is this black and white squiggle stripe? It is called Tabitha. I think it is fun and playful, but it is also slippery like swim wear….because it is SWIM FABRIC!! Yep, a super fun and squiggly printed swim fabric! Summer is winding down here in Ohio and really, I don’t do much swimming. This print was too fun to pass up though. I ordered it up from Stitchin’ Pretties and they still have some in stock! I only ordered 1 yard of it because I was actually going to make some fun underwear. I loved this fabric too much to hide it under my clothing though.
If you sew many things for a plus size body, you will know it is hard to make anything bigger than a tank top and underwear with a single yard cut. I decided I would dig in my scrap bin (Yes, Again!) and see if I could find some scraps. I ended up finding this dark green which happens to also be from Stitchin’ Pretties. Remember when I used it to make a Jessie top? You can view that post here. I was happy to have a scrap large enough to cut some decent length raglan sleeves. In case you never thought about it, they take a lot more fabric than normal sleeves.
I was able to just barely cut my front and back bodices from my 1 yard piece of fabric. I even had to dip into the selvage just a bit to make it work. I was mostly able to stay on track with my stripe matching although my stripes may be a little tilted. I didn’t even notice until I was sewing the bottom hem. Although when I was eeking by, I was willing to forego stripe matching if need be. I was going to get a raglan cut from this print if I had to do some kind of Harry Potter sorcery on it.
Did you know that one of 5 out of 4’s most popular patterns is the Agility Tank? Did you know the Agility tank just expanded its size range? Yep, now it comes in sizes up to 5x which matches the size range of newer 5 out of 4 designs.
For testing, I made my first ever sports bra. I have only purchased one sports bra in my entire adult life and that was because I needed a racer back to wear with a shirt on my blog. I hated it BTW. I don’t like sports bras for general everyday wear because I require a lot of support in the bust area. I ordered some mesh to sew into my bra, but as it turns out all mesh is not created equal. The mesh I received was more of a mesh overlay compared to a supportive mesh even though it was labeled power mesh. If you order mesh for sports bra use, please make sure it is the sturdy stuff.
So let’s talk about my tank dress with built in bra. I used a heavier cotton lycra for the bra portion and added the clear elastic through the straps and neckband as the pattern recommended. This did help somewhat with support, but again a strong power mesh would have helped more. I also did a little height adjusting. I removed 1 inch from the back racer before attaching the back T to the back bra strap. I also removed 1 inch from the front straps to help hold things up and in. My overlay dress fabric it a rayon spandex, I believe. I picked this up on a garage sale table at my quilt guild meeting last month, but I know it is from Joann’s because I have used it before! I loved it then and now. It is super soft, like the softest fabric ever and the colors are so vibrant! Loving that my cone flowers and phlox are blooming!
I made the 4x graded to a 5x as usual with 5 out of 4 patterns. I chose to make the Racer T back style but you could make the strappy option if you prefer. I also choose to make a dress, but you could do just a bra option or a top length. I removed 2 inches from the skirt to adjust for my height. It is still a little longer than the designer intended as it should hit mid knee. I just did a regular hem, but you could choose bands or drawstrings. So many options. I always say that is why I love 5 out of 4.

While putting together this tank, I made a video for my readers. This time I am showing you how to use the Stitch in the Ditch foot to neatly hide top stitching lines. Since I am doing this on a sports bra, there isn’t a lot of room to do top stitching so I decided I wanted to hide my stitches. I used a straight stitch slightly lengthen to do this. Maggie has gotten a lot of love on my blog, but Melissa, the designer has been off living her best life for awhile. Good news though, she is back and drafting up a storm. I pulled out one of my most used Bella Sunshine Designs patterns for this series. A few months ago, I discovered that I really like tops with interesting sleeve details. I am working on putting together a series of shirt sleeve hacks to run right here, on my blog. Today, I am introducing you to my first one.
Let’s start with a reminder of the Maggie pattern. Maggie comes in a top, tunic, and dress lengths. I typically cut the tunic length as I prefer my shirts a little big longer. It comes with an included Full Bust Adjustment. There are 3 neckline options as well as 3 sleeve lengths! This version is a tunic, adjusted sleeves with a scoop neckline and pairs perfectly with leggings. I sewed a 24 bust graded to a 28 waist. Bella Sunshine Designs includes sizing up to 30.
This fabric is a beautiful new release from Amelia Lane Designs. It is called Dulce and is on new sale as it debuts. It is a double brushed poly and the colors are absolutely beautiful. You can pick the fabric up here. ALD has great quality fabrics and a wide variety of fabric bases. Also, super fast shipping, which is what is very important to me as a customer.
Maggie sews up quickly, but since this is the kick off to my Sleeve Hack Series, we are switching it up a bit. For starters, we are creating a gathered sleeve. Basically, I am going to show you how to use elastic to draw your sleeve up and create a new look. Sometimes, even simple changes make for a big impact. For this top, I printed the 3/4 sleeve length even though I only planned to do about an elbow length sleeve. The reason I went ahead and printed the extra length is so I didn’t have to redraft any of the arm even though I wanted a longer than short length. I measured about 2.5 inches down from the length of the short sleeve. I knew that adding the elastic would draw the sleeve up a bit and I didn’t want the sleeves to be too short. As always with Bella Sunshine Designs, I needed a Full Bicep Adjustment. I have talked about them many times on my blog and have a little video here if you aren’t sure how to do them.
Another new thing I am trying for my blog is more videos!! I am by no means a professional, but I think this gives you a better idea of what you should do. The Easy Tee is one of my favorite and most used patterns. Most recently, I made a Momma Mia and Me set. She wanted a dress and I wanted a tunic. Since both lengths, as well as two others, are included with this pattern. We have already established #Whatmommawantsmommagets so I made the matching pair!
I used a summery print that is coming soon to Stitchin’ Pretties to make our garments. It is a lightweight and drapey knit and oh so pretty for summer. We have both worn our items since taking these photos and received compliments. It always feels good when someone compliments what you are wearing when you have made it. Now let’s talk about this tunic! I choose the tunic length and graded a 4x to a 5x. I love having comfy shirts around so I can just toss them over leggings and go on with my day. This is basically my go to wardrobe on the weekends and evenings. At home, I love to relax. I chose the scoop neck with the short sleeve option. I did a 1.5 inch bicep adjustment.
Momma Mia wanted a summer dress, Momma Mia always wants a dress. She opted for the shorter of the 2 dress lengths. She wanted 3/4 sleeves, pockets and the crew neck line. She also likes to have the extra fullness at the bottom so I rarely grade back in for her smaller hips. This dress is a XL graded to a XXl back in to a XL. The best part of sewing custom clothing is you always get exactly what you want!

When the tester call came out for a cross front tunic, I was skeptical. I have made several wrap tops, most weren’t wearable. I prefer a little more coverage than most wrap tops provide. So like any good tester, I signed up. 🙂 I believe my response was something like, “I will trust 5oo4. Rachelle won’t let me down.” She didn’t! I love this top. I want to make more!
The banded cross front panel has clear elastic sewn in the band to keep it in place and held snug. This keeps the band snug against my body. In addition to the banded cross over, the shirt also creates a tulip front bottom hem. Another nice feature is the dolman sleeve in two lengths. I choose to make the curved back hem, but the pattern includes a straight hem options as well.
Along with this cross front top, this pattern includes a slim fit tank top with two different necklines. I sewed the lower neckline option and it still provides enough coverage to keep my shirt plenty modest. The 5oo4 website describes Jenny with these bullets.

The Delicious Dress is kinda Delicious actually. This is the first dress released from Red Apple Sewing and is the follow up to the Apple Core Tee. This is a custom Made to Measurements Pattern!
So what makes this dress special? It is drafted to your exact measurements.
Do you typically make a full bust adjustment? Not with this pattern! Do you need a bicep adjustment? Not with this pattern! Are you shorter or taller? This pattern will be made to your exact numbers. I save precious time since it is drafted just for me!
So let’s talk about the pattern. Bust darts have been places to cinch in your curves just enough. I whine about sewing darts on any pattern, but honestly they go in quickly and easily and there are only 2 so it doesn’t take long at all. It is worth it in the end when they perfectly hug my curves. The back bodice and A line skirt features a seam down the back for additional contouring. You can choose to sew without the seam if you like.
This fabric is Double Brushed Poly that I think I got from Sew Blessed Fabrics. Last year I got this exact print and made another garment. I loved it so much, I needed more! I used about 2 yards for this dress.
