Love Notions Update – Lyric Peplum and Dress

Hi Friends! Exciting news from the Love Notions team! It is time for another 5 dollar Friday pattern and this time it is the Lyric Peplum and Dress. In case you don’t know, Love Notions has been working hard on updating their older patterns to the current size block and I am loving their progress. The new size chart is inclusive through a 59.5 inch hip and I think their goal is to have standard and full bust size options available on all patterns where applicable.

The Lyric is a lovely woven pattern which comes with three length options. I made the peplum version with short sleeves since it is about to be summer here in Ohio! While we are talking about the options, let me give you the run down.

The Lyrcis is

• Meant for woven fabrics
• Three lengths: peplum, knee & midi
• Four bodice cup sizes
• Flared & gathered skirt options for dress lengths
• 6 sleeve options: sleeveless, short, flutter, bell and two lengths of bishop- elbow and full length
• Patch pockets for the gathered skirt

I have been wanting a button front woven shirt for a while now, so I am really pleased to now have this one in my collection. I know you can’t tell from my photos, but there are multiple buttons and buttonholes on this top. After all my work I am a little sad I didn’t pick a more noticeable button color! Anyhow I do love this fabric which I picked up at Joann’s last year, I think. I think now that I am loving my peplum top, I will absolutely need this is the dress version! Something else that I really liked about this bodice was the neckline finish method. I don’t think I have ever used single fold bias tape to finish a neckline, but I totally love the way it looks.

The Lyric Peplum and Dress

5oo4 Outfit – Gloria & Diane

I started the day with wanting to make my mom a new Gloria top. She has a few Gloria dresses already, so a top would make a nice change up. I added 1.5 inches to the length of the peplum top to make it a wee bit longer. It is an easy adjustment. You can either measure down the desired length from the bottom of your pattern piece or split the pattern thru the middle and add your length there. Either way works. Adding to the bottom will make your skirt slightly wider at the bottom and adding to the middle will maintain the same angle at the sides because you will just reblend the side seam to smooth out the extra length. 

I love the Gloria peplum myself and I have several in my own wardrobe. This pattern is well drafted and comes together easily. It is very straight forward! Actually, I think it took longer to cut the pattern and fabric than to make the top! I certainly call that a win! Momma Mia is wearing the FBA bodice with peplum skirt. Her sleeves are elbow length, and this is the high scoop neck.  Like so many other patterns from 5oo4, this pattern has several options. Here is the list.

• Regular Bodice and 1″ FBA Bodice pieces.
• Peplum, Short or Long Skater Skirt Lengths
• Peplum, Short or Long Hi Lo Skirt Lengths (with instructions on how to combine for a more dramatic Hi Lo effect)

Since the Gloria top is such a quick sew, Momma Mia needed a pair of pants! She gets an entire outfit this time. I made her the Diane joggers in a red scuba fabric. Everyone needs bold red statement pants, rights? The Diane Joggers were one of the first pants I ever sewed for myself so I was pretty familiar with the construction and knew these pants would be a good choice for the fabric. We wanted the straight hemmed legs as it would be the dressier option to look nice with the Gloria peplum. I also used the encased elastic waistband.

Here are all the options for the Diane joggers.

• 3 rise heights (low/maternity, mid, and high)
• Shorts, Capri, and Long cut lengths
• 4 leg finishes – cuffed, hemmed, drawstring, or elastic
• Information for both hemming and using bands (hello no hemming!)
• 6 waistband options – Encased elastic, drawstring, Knit, Yoga Foldover, Contour, Maternity (underbelly)

Ummm Pockets are essential, correct? This pattern has patch pockets which I love! I used my regular sewing machine and a zig zag stitch to sew them in place. As you can see, I use zig zag stitching for all my finishes. Also thrilled to FINALLY have my sewing machine sewing correctly!!

Momma Mia picked both of these fabrics up at Zinck’s in Berlin Ohio. The print is Liverpool and the red solid is Scuba. For her top I sewed an XL graded to a 2X and her pants are a Small Back/ Medium Front waist graded to a small in the legs. We have found this really gives her the best fit! Sydney Dress Surprise!

So the Sydney dress isn’t really a surprise, but this is the first time I have made one for myself!! Momma Mia has a dress or two from this pattern. There is also another one floating around my house – it is in pieces though, if I am truly honest with you. Anyhow, this time I was self sewing and I am thrilled that I did. Let’s just check out the end result.

Well, Hello There my friend!

So the first thing I want to say about this dress is that is it literally jam packed with options. I feel like 5oo4 is second to none in loading their patterns with options. I sewed the 4x FBA graded to the 5x with 3/4 sleeves. I did a 1.5 inch bicep adjustment. I used the knee length half circle skirt pattern shorted by 2 inches. I only removed length from the skirt and not the bodice. I find that even though I am shorter than the pattern is drafted for my side waist is the correct length. Apparently, I just have shorter than average legs. I should have shortened the dress a bit more for true knee length, but I am ok with this length. I, of course, added pockets to my skirt. When given a choice, always add the pockets. This pattern is drafted to have a lined bodice, but I get too hot for that so I used some pretty picot elastic to trim out my scoop neckline. Just measure your neckline opening, multiple that by 87% and that is your length to cut the elastic. I ordered said Picot from LaceandTrims on Etsy. I ordered 2 grab bags of pretty elastics. So many great colors and all were exceptional quality and usable lengths. My order even arrived 2 days before the tracking said it would so I was super thrilled. 5/5 stars – highly recommend.

I am completely in love with this print. I gushed about it when I did an unboxing video on my business Facebook page. This is a beautiful print on Double Brushed Poly. It reminds me of an apron smock that my granny wore washing dishes. I don’t know why since they aren’t the same, but it makes me think of that. Sydney Peplum and how to piece a lining

Welcome to the 5 dollar weekend deal at 5 out of 4!! Today is Easter Sunday and we are still in quarantine due to Covid 19. Please stay in, maybe video chat with friends and family, hug your pets, wash your hands…and go buy this pattern!!

I have shared the Sydney, one other time, and it was for Momma Mia. This time, I needed a new spring shirt and thought the Sydney would be a great choice. I knew I was making a top length, but you can choose from 5 other skirts!!

I also knew I only had 2 yards of this lovely fabric from Stitchin’ Pretties. This print is called Jade and it is Double Brushed Poly. INSIDER TIP: This fabric is only $4.50 a yard in the clearance section!! Don’t wait, you need it now! I really do think this fabric is so pretty and the huge floral print is A-MAZ-ING! This print would be so lovely in a maxi dress! I would I had more yardage for sure!

So speaking of not enough fabric for a maxi, I also didn’t really have enough for for a peplum. I am a thrifty gal, so let’s hope for the best!

As the pattern says, 2 yards is not enough…. unless you get creative! So here we go. Let’s piecing the lining fabric.

Now you have a piece large enough to cut the back bodice. 🙂 Since it is the lining, no one will even know. 🙂 SO the reason for having a lining is so that you have a clean neckline without a band. Notice in the next photo. 🙂

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope you are having a good week so far, getting some sewing time in and most importantly, I hope you are healthy! Welcome to my stop on the Spring Fling Blog Tour! The theme of this blog tour is my favorite spring or summer sewing patterns. We could pick anything we wanted to share. I decided I wanted to make a dress from this adorable light plum and white mini dot printed double brushed poly fabric. I picked it up from Surge Fabrics a few weeks ago, but now it has sold out. Don’t worry, there are still tons of fabric options over at Surge!

Without much thought, I knew I was going to make the Willow Wrap Dress from Love Notions. I loved it when I first noticed it and was thrilled it was being offered in LN’s new expanded size chart. I decided to choose the bodice view with more front coverage. A lot of times, cross front bodices expose a bit more of the girls than I wish to share with everyone, so I was happy to see this one offered options for more or less coverage. I used the full bust pattern pieces. I used the gathered side option, elbow length sleeves and the longer skirt. I didn’t not adjust the skirt length for my height as I wanted my skirt to hit just below my knees.

This wasn’t a super quick sew, but it went together nicely and fit well! This pattern has 9 pieces and a mile of hemming, but it is worth it. This dress is pretty, easy to wear, and will have you feeling just a bit dressy for any party! You can sew it with or without the flutter at the cross front or choose one of the shorter length options.

This dress will be perfect for a spring afternoon, Easter Sunday, or dinner with friends, but we are under lock down here in Ohio. So for the foreseeable future, you will be treated to photos taken without my photographer. 😦 Whomp. Whomp. Anyhow, I figured out how to use the timer on my camera and brought all of you into my sewing space! My happy place! Welcome. This next photo looks like I am dancing!

Love Notions – Forte Top

I made the Forte Tunic back in late November when I was down with the cooties. I finally have taken photos of it and am able to share. What I didn’t know was that Love Notions was putting their entire website on sale for the new year. I sewed up View A. The gathered skirt peplum style is always a favorite of mine as I like to conceal my stomach. I did add 2 inches to the length of the bodice because I prefer a little extra coverage. I also wish I would have add an extra inch to the flounce. I used the 4x with the included FBA and graded out to the 5x.  I picked the short sleeve option with the flounce. This is the scoop neck version. I love it! I love that Love Notions has recently expanded to 5x on their size chart and now I am included!!!

Gloria Dress for Momma Mia

I am back with another 5oo4 make. Again this time, it is for Momma Mia. I am working on filling her closet up lately. This time, I volunteered her for a Gloria even though she typically doesn’t like the look of a peplum. She doesn’t like the seam across her belly while I personally love it. The Gloria pattern comes with my favorite peplum top and I have 4 of them. Not that 4 is too many, I am just spreading the love out a bit. Plus Momma Mia likes new dresses and she already had this awesome fabric. So let’s talk about her latest dress in her closet.

This is Gloria from 5oo4 patterns. It comes packed with options so Momma Mia had a few choices to make. First she agreed to a peplum, but I talked her into the short skater dress because there was enough fabric! I mean, why leave a 15 inch scrap of fabric when it can become a dress, right? Next, she wanted the elbow sleeves which is normal for her, but she was excited about the split sleeve option. These sleeves really only take about 10 extra minutes to hem, top stitch then attach to the bodice plus they are just a little fun detail.  As always, she prefers the high scoop neckline.

This fabric is Liverpool. I love that Liverpool gives a little bit of structure to the skirt portion, but is still comfortable in the bodice and stretches with movement. It doesn’t really wrinkle and washes well. As I am typing this up, I am actually wearing a Gloria made of Liverpool that I made more than a year ago. It still looks as nice as it did when I made it! It really gives a dressy appearance to an outfit. This Liverpool came from Zinck’s Fabric Warehouse in Berlin, Ohio. This print is fun for spring in summer, but I think she can also wear some tights and be good to go for fall! I visit a few times a year and we picked this one up in spring after they did a huge stocking.

Sydney Dress

The Women’s Sydney has been on my sewing table twice so far! The first time, I sewed the pockets in wrong TWICE. I threw it into a corner. I have some pieces, some parts are in the scrap bin, and I think there also may be a piece of it on the bookcase in my bedroom. So this time when Momma Mia needed a new dress, I decided I would make the Sydney again. I gave myself a little pep talk and set to work.

Momma Mia always requests two things when I sew for her. Elbow-ish length sleeves and the dress length should be around her calves. She was in luck, as these were both options for the Sydney dress.

We decided she will have the elbow length sleeves, Tea length dress and it would be a half circle skirt not a full circle. She also got the Jewel front neckline and the Scoop for her back neckline.  Here are all the options included with the Sydney Dress.

  The bodice is fully lined which means it uses a bit more fabric than just a regular top, but the neckline is super neat since there is no banding, no binding, or no top stitching. I had a 4 yard length of this amazing brushed poly fabric, which I got from Sly Fox Fabrics, but ending up needing just a little bit more for one half of the lining. Thankfully, I have a well-stocked scrap pile! 

  Overall, this dress sewed fairly quickly even though it has a lot of steps. Pockets, lined bodice, sleeves, and a mile of hemline on this dress. It was all worth it, Momma Mia is happy and likes twirling around in her new dress!

How fun is this combo? This is one of those outfits where my mom said, “It looks ok, for you.” 🙂 So first off, this shirt! This gorgeous peplum is my absolute fabric pattern when I make it in Liverpool! I love the structured look of it. This Liverpool print is from Stitchin’ Pretties! This amazing cardigan is the Ladies Circle Cardi from Rebecca Page. Here is the link. First off, don’t let the looks of this pattern laid out on paper freak you out when you see it. It looks a little weird, but it works out. Because I sew in the largest size offered, I wasn’t able to cut my pattern on the fold. If you look super close, you can see I have a seam down the back. I worked hard to match it up! Anyhow, I love this. I actually wore it twice in the last couple days. This fabric is a Hacci from Fabric Mart. I picked it up months ago at a super discount price! I have made the short length, hemmed, and 3/4 sleeves. Here are all the pattern options:

• 2 length options (short or long),
• 3 hem options (plain, band or ruffle)
• 3 sleeve options (sleeveless, ¾ and full length).

So let’s talk about why the prints work:

They are both super fun prints. Even though the both have crazy zig-zag stripes they are just different enough to stand apart. The common color between them, Black, helps pull them together. Imagine if the blue and black remained the same color, but the cardigan changes to white and green. This would give it a totally different look and throws off the color balance. Three’s company, Four’s a crowd. 🙂
