Going Home Sweater for Momma Mia

I haven’t been blogging much or even sewing. I have been mostly just hanging out, geocaching and keeping a low profile. I have made Momma Mia several clothing items though. She has requested some long sleeve shirts for summer as she needs to avoid the sun. No problem, I can do that. Before I even began sewing, I wanted to look at the best fabric for the job. I ordered her a few cotton lycra fabrics and this beautiful CVC Jersey fabric. CVC is an antimicrobial fabric. This means the fabric offers protection against bacteria, mold, mildew, and other yucky microbes. This fabric is a cotton poly blend, but it is cool like cotton. This fabric/color is called Suzanne.

I decided to make Momma a Going Home Sweater from Ellie and Mac. A super quick raglan sleeve pattern. It comes with these options.

Three sleeve options

Cowl or neckband option

Shirt, tunic or dress length options

I made her the tunic length, neckband option, and long sleeves. I used thumb hole cuffs from another pattern to create this top.

Catalina Dress – Phat Quarters

Phat Quarters is working its way into adult patterns and out of the gate they were size inclusive through a 66 inch hip. I love this so much! The most recent pattern is called Catalina! Catalina is a lovely Raglan pattern that comes with various length options and a variety of sleeves and collar heights. I sewed up the dress length with the elbow bishop sleeves and a slouchy collar. I really adore the sleeves and this fabric makes them feel super lux.

The Catalina comes with two bust options – B and D sewing cups. This is like the Full Bust Adjustment included option that several other designers have. The pattern is drafted with a little extra room depending on which sewing cup you choose.  I really love that both options are included as it means I don’t have to do my own full bust adjustment. I did adjust for my larger than life biceps though! The Bishop sleeves have a lot of ease built into them, but I still adjusted so they had the proper amount of fullness. I LOVE them! I mean, I LOVE THEM! I want these sleeves on everything! You can choose Bishop sleeves for the elbow or long sleeve lengths.

I styled my long dress in two ways to show you just how versatile this pattern is. You can wear it as a dress or belted and pulled out for a great tunic! I love when I am able to style garments in different ways to expand their use. I really adore this over jeans with sandals. I am so ready for warmer days to arrive.

Let’s talk about this amazing fabric! Roxy!!!  I feel like only super foxy folks should wear fabric called Roxy, so I have been saving this fabric for something special! Annabeth – Momma Mia’s Turn

I am still catching up from being sickie… Here we go again!!

I missed Momma Mia’s Birthday and Thanksgiving and work and life…

I was sickkkk. I missed all the fun, but I kept my cooties to myself. For a Birthday surprise, I sewed up a new top for Momma Mia. This is the Annabeth from 5oo4 patterns. She liked my original one so I thought she would enjoy a comfy shirt as well. I even got to dig into my scrap pile for this one! 

Remember this gorgeous French Terry from my Constellation Hoodie? I sewed that project at Momma Mia’s and she mentioned she liked the fabric. Lucky for her, I had enough left overs to make her a shirt! I always feel Raglan tops, with their large wonky sleeves, lend themselves well to scraps because the bodice bodies and sleeves are often similar sized pieces. Typically, when I make a shirt that is cut on the fold, I end up with about a 15 inch offcut at the side and it goes into the scrap pile. Momma Mia needs about 15 inches to make her sleeves 🙂 So I used my left over FT for the bodice and leftover DBP for the sleeves, bands, and cuffs. Score! I used this same tan color recently on her Jessie Dress. I hope she liked the color. I think it’s pretty.

I made the XL FBA bust to a 3x waist back to an XL hip. This way, she can layer it up, wear it over leggings or just lounge around the house and be comfy. She is similar to me in this way and comfort always wins! Momma Mia is wearing a tunic length, not shortened for her height. I banded the sleeves and the bottom shirt hem. She got long sleeves, no pocket. Even though this top looks color blocked, I didn’t use the color blocked pattern option which is actually different panels for the sides.

Another Annabeth

Holy Moly Readers, I have been SICK! Like lock me up and throw away the key sick. Yesterday, Christmas, was the first day I really got to hang out with Momma Mia in about 5 weeks. Yep, I was quarantined since before Thanksgiving. I honestly didn’t do a lot of sewing in that time because I was mostly in bed, but I had a few items ready for photos and did a mad rush on sewing the week before Christmas! So prepare yourself, I have some sharing to do! Here we go… This was a November Sew!

Surprise! I made myself another Annabeth. This really does make the perfect sweatshirt. I adored my original in animal print, but I can only wear it so many days in a row before people start to worry about me. I didn’t shorten this shirt like I did the first Annabeth. I should have removed about 3 inches according to my height. With its longer length, Annabeth becomes the perfect sweatshirt dress. I have worn this one already several times. I *may* be wearing it as I type this. It is perfect for wearing over leggings or skinny jeans. I have worn it at the office, out geocaching and at my sewing table. By now you guys know I love comfy clothing. There really isn’t much better in life then being comfortable. Except brownies…brownies *might* be better!

I used this hot pink and black printed Cotton Lycra from Stitchin’ Pretties. This print is called Riva! I really like geometric prints and these funky little triangles are only made more awesome by the fact they are flipped on their sides and run sorta vertically and staggered. It wears nicely, washes and dries fine, and even pulled from a laundry basket, it is ready to wear. 🙂 I am on the promo team for Stitchin’ Pretties, but I am also a customer! I actually was invited to the promo team because I was a customer first. I order a large percentage of my fabrics from SP. I adore the shop owner, Laura. She is super friendly and helpful. Reagan Raglan

It has been awhile since I sewed up a Reagan Raglan for myself. This pattern was actually one of my very first sewing pattern tests. I had no idea what I was doing, but thankfully, the BSD team didn’t kick me out. They really helped me along. I have really learned so much since then. I love going back to my roots, so to speak, and sewing up some Bella Sunshine Designs. I love that their clothing always fits, the size range is consistent and all newer patterns include an FBA.

Bella Sunshine Designs has a pattern range from kiddos to almost a 60 inch hip and bust. I am wearing a 24 bust with the included Full Bust Adjustment. My shirt is graded to a 28 at the waist and hip. I decided to make the tunic length shortened by one inch. I did a bicep adjustment of 1.5 inches for this pattern and this is a pretty standard adjustment for me. I used the scoop neckline, mostly because I stink at V necks, but I do like the scoop best.

Let’s talk fabric. How fun is this black and white squiggle stripe? It is called Tabitha. I think it is fun and playful, but it is also slippery like swim wear….because it is SWIM FABRIC!! Yep, a super fun and squiggly printed swim fabric! Summer is winding down here in Ohio and really, I don’t do much swimming. This print was too fun to pass up though. I ordered it up from Stitchin’ Pretties and they still have some in stock! I only ordered 1 yard of it because I was actually going to make some fun underwear. I loved this fabric too much to hide it under my clothing though.

If you sew many things for a plus size body, you will know it is hard to make anything bigger than a tank top and underwear with a single yard cut. I decided I would dig in my scrap bin (Yes, Again!) and see if I could find some scraps. I ended up finding this dark green which happens to also be from Stitchin’ Pretties. Remember when I used it to make a Jessie top? You can view that post here. I was happy to have a scrap large enough to cut some decent length raglan sleeves. In case you never thought about it, they take a lot more fabric than normal sleeves.

I was able to just barely cut my front and back bodices from my 1 yard piece of fabric. I even had to dip into the selvage just a bit to make it work. I was mostly able to stay on track with my stripe matching although my stripes may be a little tilted. I didn’t even notice until I was sewing the bottom hem. Although when I was eeking by, I was willing to forego stripe matching if need be. I was going to get a raglan cut from this print if I had to do some kind of Harry Potter sorcery on it.
