Love Notions – Terra Tunic Updated

I’m happy to report another Love Notions pattern has joined the updated club. <woot> This time, it is the Terra Tunic. This pattern is a surprisingly quick sew and has multiple neckline options. Bonus! It is the $5 Feature Friday pattern!! Use code Sequoia10 to save even more!

I have made two so far. One was during testing and the other was after the test was finished. I also sewed one for Momma Mia will I will share in a day or two. I love when quick patterns offer simple changes yet still look very different.

For this one, I made the basic scoop neck option with 3/4 sleeves. I wanted a lovely top that could be comfy and casual or easily dressed up. Also, I needed to add another top to my solids collection I have been working on so I have more mix and match opportunities in my closet. This pattern is perfect for filling that spot in my wardrobe. Lately, I am more focused on quality makes instead of quantity. I have so many clothes that I need them to be multi purpose.

The options that are included with this pattern are as follows.

• 6 neckline options: scoop, v-neck, funnel, asymmetrical, boat neck and v-neck hood
• 4 sleeve lengths: short, elbow, 3/4 & long
• Deep hem with side vents
• Optional welt pockets and elbow patches
• Video tutorials: welt pockets and side vents

Now let’s talk about this fabric. This is the yummiest mint brushed rib knit ever!! Side note: it is currently only $4 a yard!! Here is my afflink to pick some up! I think I have really been sewing a lot of texture so rib knit is another fun one to add to the line up. I think that the texture helps me get over my fear of solid color fabrics. 🙂

Fancy Like – Sloane Edition

I am sure everyone who lives on this planet knows the Walker Hayes song, Fancy Like. I hear it everywhere these days, sing along with it on the radio, and this top has me feeling fancy too! So let’s talk about it.

I know you will be shocked to see me making another Love Notions pattern, <Insert Eye Roll> but when you find a good thing, you stick with it! 

The Love Notions Sloane has been on the blog a time or two already, but this time I went real fancy like. This fabric is called Tamed on The Fab Clique Fabric Shoppe, but I am not feeling very tame wearing it. What is more awesome than brown shimmery animal print fabric?? Brown shimmery animal print burnout velvet fabric! It is so so good, my friends! Don’t forget that when working with fabric like velvet, you have to work with the nap. Just know that you want to cut your fabric so that when brushed downward, it is smooth. I don’t have a ton of experience sewing velvet fabric and never have I sewn any burn out, but it wasn’t painful at all. 🙂 I added a few extra clips when lining up the neckband and the bodice to help with a little bit of rolling and then it was a breeze! Tamed whizzed through my serger like a champ. When it came time to add the bottom band, I actually ran a serger stitch along the bottom to hold my band layers together before serging the band to the bodice. I did this because velvet, by nature, is a little shifty and then the burn out element means that small sections are a sheer fabric.

Speaking of the burnout element here, I know someone will ask if it is see thru. The easy response here is, yes those areas are see thru. There is a sheer ‘net” filling in those gaps. I tried my top on with a teal printed bra and you could totally see that, but when I put on a skin toned bra it wasn’t noticeable. That being said, I didn’t wear a cami under this fabric and felt comfortable wearing it. As always, you do you. 🙂 This was a total win for me in the “solid color” but not solid fabric game I have been playing lately! 

So let’s talk about the pattern now. The Love Notions Sloane top has a few options mainly color blocked parts or not. For this one, I didn’t color block. I used the solid bodice options and the bands. I made body style B which is the boxier fit because I don’t like overly fitted clothing. Fun Fact: I sewed the entire thing with my serger which was awesome since I didn’t want to hunt down some dark brown thread for my sewing machine. I made the 3x with included Full bust adjustment and long sleeves with cuffs. I did a 1 inch bicep adjustment which I have blogged about here. Friends, I love this one!

A New Annabeth

One of my favorite sweatshirt patterns is the Annabeth from 5 out of 4. I have made several and I wear one of them nearly every time I go to walk in the woods. Like so many of my favorite tops, they are worn out, colors faded and now just too big. I decided I deserved a new one. Let’s do this!

I have used French Terry for most of the Annabeths I have made myself or for my mom, but this one is Waffle knit. This is a new fabric for me to sew and I have been curious to try it out. This rich chocolate color is called Farrah. The website also calls it Cappuccino, but I think we should call it delicious. It is such a lovely rich brown color and I love it so much already. This will quickly become a closet staple. I seem to be sewing a lot of browns lately, maybe I am in fashion and don’t even know. I just love all the shades of brown right now.

Let’s talk about sewing this waffle knit. It has enough weight to be a nice fabric, it didn’t curl or fray when I cut, and it went through my serger without issues. It is a poly, rayon, lycra blend with 4 way stretch so it will work for loads of knit garments. #sewhappy I even had enough spools of matching threads that my seams are actually brown. 🙂 If you want to grab some for yourself, here is the link.

FARRAH–BRUSHED WAFFLE KNIT–CAPPUCCINO

Let’s get back to my pattern deets. I will give you all the pattern details next, but I have made the tunic length with long sleeves which I shorted by 1 inch. I added regular cuffs and the neckband. I did the solid bodice instead of the color blocked bodice. I sewed the 3x with the included FBA and graded out to a 4x. 

Here are all the pattern details for you.

Love Notions – Breckenridge Henley

One of my favorite tops is tie dye printed Breckenridge Henley. I made it during the testing and it wasn’t 100% perfect, but totally wearable. I have worn it to death and now it has gotten a little too big so it just looks sloppy. I have been wearing it mostly to the gym these days because it is so comfy, but it is time to make a new one. So let’s do it!

When I ordered this awesome print from Stitchin’ Pretties was really excited. When it arrived, I immediately tossed it in the wash so it would be ready. If you haven’t worked with double brushed poly before, I encourage you to do it. It is super easy to wash and wear, you won’t need to iron it all the time, it feels like cozy pjs plus it comes in a million prints and colors. I really like this pattern and the faux bucket placket. *Not a single button hole was sewn during the making of this tunic.* Basically I sewed the binding on and then overlapped the right and left sides and pinned those layers together. I dropped the feed dogs on my machine and did a quick zig zag over the button to sew it in place. I decided that the stark white buttons was actually a fun pop of color! (They were also in my stash, upstairs, and I didn’t have to search for them.) #Lazy #Makeitwork #Itdoeswork

Here are the options included with the pattern. I made a size 3x with the included FBA in the tunic length and short sleeves. I actually think I will remove another inch or so from the length. Sometimes I get very nervous about removing length from patterns even though I am shorter than the height it is drafted for. I have some insecurities and I like certain parts of me covered up. I am learning to work with what I currently have and as my body is changing I need to learn how to adjust that.

Easy Tee – Retro vibes!

If I had to pick one pattern to reach for when I need a sewing win, it is the Easy Tee from 5 out of 4. When I need a quick finish, to get out of a sewing funk, or just a super comfy top, I will always use the Easy Tee. I actually a few more version of this pattern coming up in the near future! This pattern is perfect for so many folks and I love it for myself or when I am sewing for Momma Mia. Today is was Momma Mia’s turn! Let’s Go!

This fabric is so GROOVY!

This is the first strike I have sewn for The Fab Clique, but I have used their fabric several times during the last year or two. I am really excited to add more of it into my closet! They have quick turn around times and a great selection!

I am obsessed with the colors of the fabric! So many options for coordinates!

I love the retro feel of this print and so did my mom. She claimed dibs as soon as I showed her. She immediately wanted a new Easy Tee dress which I was happy to make for her. She is totally working that 70’s vibe, complete with the short dress length and stacked bracelets! This pattern is perfect for so many different knits, but I love when its made from double brushed poly. It makes it an easy sew with a serger or sewing machine!

Who is still sewing Christmas gifts in the 11th hour? Me! I am so far behind on sewing in general and am just struggling with the motivation to sew at all. I guess sewing with deadlines is a true motivator though because here I am making Momma Mia a new PJ house dress in time to share for the #5oo4pajamaparty. This is also 100% supportive of my motto which is “Pants are dumb.'”

I made Momma Mia a pajama dress so she can feel extra comfy while lounging around this winter. I love wearing new clothing no matter where I am actually wearing them. This is the 5 out of 4 Easy Tee that you have seen me use so many times. This is one of my favorite patterns ever and I have likely sewn it in every combination at this point. Just like almost all of the other 5oo4 patterns, this one comes loaded with options.

I sewed the knee length dress with a few extra inches added to make it a bit longer. I used the crew neck line and the 3/4 sleeves. Plus we can’t forget the pockets for snacks. She was a bit shocked and asked if I really put pockets in her PJs. I couldn’t come up with a single reason NOT to put pockets in her PJs, so yes she has pockets in her new jams! lol

My fabric is a festive double brushed poly that was sent to me by the lovely Jessica Cee of JOT designs. When I grabbed it off the shelf, I thought it was horizontal stripes, but was kinda excited that they turned out to be vertical. PS: Horizontal stipes can be worn my any BODY!

Love Notions – Constellation Hoodie

Hi Friends! I have a few things to let ya know about. First off the Constellation Hoodie pattern is the Feature Friday pattern at Love Notions this week and it is Fall Perfection! Since it is on feature it is only $5 and worth every penny!

I made my first one almost 2 years ago and blogged about it here. I used the hood options and the thumb hole cuffs on that version so this time I knew I wanted to show off different options!

Thumb hole cuffs deserve a thumbs up!

This time I used a heavier weight fabric and I love the slight structure of it. My collar stands up nicely which was really important to me! I used the regular cuff with an additional .5 inches of width added since I left the original length was a bit snug and I was unable to push my sleeves up.

Let’s talk about my fabric. Like I said, I used a heavier weight fabric which I picked up at Zinck’s of Berlin. I loved the pale purple background with the purple and red plaid layout. If you notice, the inside of my collar and the background behind my pockets, that fabric is actually my main fabric just the backside of it. 🙂 I couldn’t really find a fabric that contrasted yet matched enough to work so this ended up being the perfect solution. My red accent fabric is a scuba weight fabric and my red zipper were both also from Zinck’s.

George and Ginger – Batwing Tunic

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na Batwing! For those keeping track that is the second time I have began a post here by saying that. I hope that is now stuck in your head because it has been stuck in mine for a few days now.

Bat Wings!!

I think it’s time to kick off Fall sewing season! I love fall and I love layers. I have written about that so many times here on the blog. Plus, this fall I am planning a geocaching road trip so that warrants a new wardrobe right? Even though it is still August and nearly 100* F outside, I am already wearing long sleeves to work so I don’t freeze to death!

This is the George and Ginger Batwing tunic. While this tunic is pretty awesome on its own, it also has a cardigan included in the pattern. It is like a 2 for 1 deal! This time, I only sewed the straight hem tunic version, but that cardigan is coming up soon so stay tuned! You could also make the included hi lo hem option! I really love pattern options!!

I have to admit, I have only sewn a few Batwing tops, but I feel like this one is my favorite. I really love that it has an overly slouchy fit and I already want another one. As I was figuring out which pattern I planned to use for this fabric, I knew I wanted something I could wear with jeans or dress pants, a skirt or even over a dress to mix up the look a little bit! I have been mentally thinking of garments which will be more versatile in my wardrobe. I have a lot of single purpose garments that don’t mix and match well with what I already have and I need to fix that. Which patterns are your favorites? LMK.

I used this midweight Black French Terry from Stitchin’ Pretties. It is fantastic, Friends! I love the weight and feel of it. I kinda need it in all the colors. I had a two yard cut of this and even though the Batwing Tunic directions said I would need 2.5 yards, it worked with my 2 yard cut! Success!!! In case you have been out of the loop for a long long time, SP still has their buy 2 continuous yards and get a surprise yard of fabric free! BONUS!

I made a few minor tweaks to my pattern. I am at the tippy top of George and Ginger’s “Old School” size chart so I added a little additional width across the belly and hip area. I didn’t want it to be fitted here since that was not the intended fit. For my next one, I will also add about .5 inch additional width around the cuff so it is slightly less snug on my forearms. The best part of sewing my own clothing is that I can made these adjustments and then the fit is spot on!

When I first became a tester at George and Ginger, I know I was going to have to expand my closet colors and prints because I am a floral girl at all times, so here we go…black. LOL I think the Batwing pairs perfectly with my Snakeskin pants! I made the pants too and they were actually the first episode of Refashion your Closet on my Youtube channel. You can watch as I make them here. (Please go show me some love, Friends!) That was a really fun make and I love the concept of the series. My plans for that series has been derailed by medical issues, but stay tuned! It is back in September!

With Spooky Season approaching now (It is Septemeber 1st, after all) is the time to get your fall sewing underway. I do suggest the George and Ginger Batwing pattern for you! Batwing Tunic and Cardigan

George and Ginger – Lively Dress

Summer is winding down, but I still need all the dresses. Dresses will transition to fall if you add layers, correct? Yes! Tights, jacket, cardigan, long sleeve crop, boots… so many options my friends. It is currently too hot for layers, so you are going to have to trust me. I decided to sew up my first ever Lively dress and I am happy I did for several reasons.

1. I adore the gathering at the shoulder and yoke detailing.
2. I love a flirty twirly skirt.
3. Stripes and Floral colorblocking potentional.
4. The pattern has both a tunic and a dress option.
5. Today it is on sale!

Yesss, I love full skirts so much.

Let’s talk about the pattern.

This is the Lively from George and Ginger. It is a great pattern and on their old school size chart. The pattern is sized through 5x which is a 55.5 inch bust and a 59 inch hip. I did a 1 inch full bust adjustment so I could have a little extra room in the bust and belly. Yes, a bust adjustment will add room in the belly which I need in GG patterns. As it turned out, I didn’t need the additional room in the bust, but I am so pleased with my first Lively.

I chose to leave out the lining because I am way too hot for lined shirts. LOL I just added a simple neckband by smoothing the curves at the neckline a bit and moved on with my less overheated life. I also left off the sleeve ruffle because I want to wear a denim jacket over this dress come fall. Plus my fabric isn’t navy on the inside and I hate seeing white fabric inside a sleeve when it billows around.

Back yoke in contract fabric really makes the gathering stand out!

I believe my floral fabric came from The Fab Fabric Clique and the stripes were from an online auction. I adore them both separately, but they worked so well together because the navy blue is consistent and the scale is different. Yes, folks you should totally wear your stipes and your florals together!!! This pattern has a lot of gathering at the back and a=near the front shoulders.
