Camilla – My Dear Friend

Last week, 5 out of 4 hosted a Sew Along on their website/Facebook group/Youtube Channel for the Camilla Top. I usually don’t get super amped up about Sew Alongs because I don’t like to drag a project out for days. However, if I love the project as much as I love Camilla…Game On!

I have made several Camilla tops and you can view them by clicking the link. Camilla is a fairly quick sew especially when you have made it  few times! Give it a try!!

Let’s talk about fabric. I want to start by saying I am 100% in love with the feel of this fabric! Hello cool drapy goodness…I need you in my life! This fabric is Cameron ITY and it is from Stitchin’ Pretties. I love ITY. This one was easy to sew, cool to the touch, and has the best drape EVER! The Camilla top really needs a fabric with amazing drape to make the best of the front cowl neckline.

I just ordered another ITY print from Stitchin’ Pretties. The Camilla pattern

This time I decided to do a straight 5x to have a little more room through the bust area. Since this is an older 5oo4 pattern, it doesn’t include the FBA which is now included with their patterns. I also graded out to the A-line dress lines, but cut it at a tunic length. This allowed me to have a little more room overall. My sleeves are elbow length.

Sydney Peplum and how to piece a lining

Welcome to the 5 dollar weekend deal at 5 out of 4!! Today is Easter Sunday and we are still in quarantine due to Covid 19. Please stay in, maybe video chat with friends and family, hug your pets, wash your hands…and go buy this pattern!!

I have shared the Sydney, one other time, and it was for Momma Mia. This time, I needed a new spring shirt and thought the Sydney would be a great choice. I knew I was making a top length, but you can choose from 5 other skirts!!

I also knew I only had 2 yards of this lovely fabric from Stitchin’ Pretties. This print is called Jade and it is Double Brushed Poly. INSIDER TIP: This fabric is only $4.50 a yard in the clearance section!! Don’t wait, you need it now! I really do think this fabric is so pretty and the huge floral print is A-MAZ-ING! This print would be so lovely in a maxi dress! I would I had more yardage for sure!

So speaking of not enough fabric for a maxi, I also didn’t really have enough for for a peplum. I am a thrifty gal, so let’s hope for the best!

As the pattern says, 2 yards is not enough…. unless you get creative! So here we go. Let’s piecing the lining fabric.

Now you have a piece large enough to cut the back bodice. 🙂 Since it is the lining, no one will even know. 🙂 SO the reason for having a lining is so that you have a clean neckline without a band. Notice in the next photo. 🙂

Gloria is Glorious!

I *think* I have sewn 7 Gloria tops! One of my favorite ones is missing from the college below. I can’t locate a picture of it. 😦 This is one of my most loved patterns. I love that it is loaded with options on its own, but it is super hackable!

Today I am sharing a new hack and it is for Momma Mia! You will notice she isn’t in lock down and was able to be in the pictures. I took this photos a few weeks ago before house arrest! So let’s talk about what I did…

First off, this isn’t your typical Gloria bodice. I added 3 inches to the length of the bodice as Momma Mia requested it to attach to the skirt closer to her hips. That was easy to do by just lengthening the bodice. For the skirt, I used the long hi lo skirt option. I love that the hi lo shows off her stylish boots while still swaying as the wind blows. She wanted long sleeves and the higher neck line. I was able to make her dress exactly how she wanted it and she was so pleased with it.

My fabric is a Liverpool base and these flowers are so pretty. I picked it up at Zinck’s Fabric Warehouse just before Christmas. What you can’t see from these pictures is when I got the fabric home, there was a large section of fabric that the ink had been smeared/discolored so I had to do some fancy cutting. I ended up having to put a seam down the back of the skirt in order to get this skirt length. It all worked out in the end, though it was super annoying at the time.

Nancy Raglan

The Nancy Raglan from 5oo4 isn’t a new pattern, but it is a great one. I made Momma Mia one for the #Breakallthedamnrules tour, but didn’t get it worked into the month that was jam packed with great makes! The readers of my blog know that Momma Mia doesn’t mix prints and Momma Mia doesn’t do wild color or prints. (Insert Side Eye) Well Momma Mia, You shouldn’t have neon blue tights in your dresser drawer. (Insert Evil Eye)

This is the first Raglan I have made for Momma Mia, it may actually be the only one in her closet. I can say she loved it! I made her an A-Line Dress with elbow length sleeves. Elbow sleeves aren’t an actual option with this pattern so I just shortened the ¾ sleeves a few inches to get to her favorite length. That is the beauty of sewing. You make the pattern fit your needs! I also made this pattern with a cowl neck.

Cowl necks are made to snuggle into.

My favorite things about 5 out of 4 patterns are all the options. Here is a run down of all the great things that you can choose from on the Nancy Raglan.

• 5 bodice styles: Shirt, Tunic, A-line Dress, Swing Dress, Layered Dress (A-line with a loose fit overlay)
• 4 sleeve lengths: Short, 3/4, Long, Extra Long
• 4 neckline options: Crew, V-neck, Hood, Cowl
• 3 sleeve finishes: Hemmed, Cuffs, Thumbhole Cuffs
• Nursing access via invisible zippers and including a modesty panel.  The nursing access is available on all styles except the layered dress.
• Maternity with ruched sides.  The maternity option is included with all styles except the layered dress.
• Other options include: side vents on the tunic, pockets on the swing dress, and a banded bottom for the shirt and tunic.

Since these was made during #Breakallthedamnrules let’s talk about why it works!

Ummm Because I said so! LOL I like the bright pop of blue and how it plays with the bright pink and golds in the dress. I had her load up on the fun bracelets, to match the gold flowers in her dress. In a last minute executive designs, we realized my backpack was a perfect match for the pinks and blues! The geometric print of the bag is a nice match with the floral.

This is an XL graded to a XXL. I used the included FBA pattern piece for extra comfort. This floral print fabric is from Stitchin’ Pretties. It is called Millie, it is double brushed poly and I love it. That is why I have ordered it 3 times now! Millie is sold out, but there are dozens of other gorgeous fabrics at Stitchin’ Pretties! They also have a 1 day shipping turn around during the week. 🙂 I also used it to make this cardigan.

This amazing cardigan is the Ladies Circle Cardi from Rebecca Page. Here is the link. First off, don’t let the looks of this pattern laid out on paper freak you out when you see it. It looks a little weird, but it works out. Because I sew in the largest size offered, I wasn’t able to cut my pattern on the fold. If you look super close, you can see I have a seam down the back. I worked hard to match it up! Anyhow, I love this. I actually wore it twice in the last couple days. This fabric is a Hacci from Fabric Mart. I picked it up months ago at a super discount price! I have made the short length, hemmed, and 3/4 sleeves. Here are all the pattern options:

• 2 length options (short or long),
• 3 hem options (plain, band or ruffle)
• 3 sleeve options (sleeveless, ¾ and full length).

So let’s talk about why the prints work:

They are both super fun prints. Even though the both have crazy zig-zag stripes they are just different enough to stand apart. The common color between them, Black, helps pull them together. Imagine if the blue and black remained the same color, but the cardigan changes to white and green. This would give it a totally different look and throws off the color balance. Three’s company, Four’s a crowd. 🙂

Molly PJ’s

Sorry guys!! I have been MIA for awhile. I have missed sewing and I have really missed writing and sharing with all of you. I have about 6 items I need to share, but I am starting with the Molly PJ’s! Two reasons- The pattern is on sale today and the fabric is on sale too!

The thing is, Molly is the women’s version, but there is also patterns for Men and kiddos. Finally, the entire family gets to match! I even made a doggy sweater! Sadly, there isn’t a pattern for the pups.

So Momma Mia got roped into another photo session with me. She loves her PJs though and we look awesome! Tasha, Chico, and Star aren’t too bad either. 

I graded between a 4x and 5x for my bodice and used 4x for the bottoms. For my top, I added 3 inches to the length because I can’t stand shirts that end above my belly. I used the bodice with the FBA included in the pattern. I added 1 inch to the bicep using my favorite bicep adjustment technique. You can view my video here.  I made a muslin to fit test my bottoms. I used a DBP for them as well. It is important to test fit new garments. When you do this, you should use fabric with a similar stretch. I did a 4x with a belly adjustment, but it wasn’t needed since DBP is pretty stretchy. The bottoms were a little more roomy than I wanted so for these photos I am wearing a straight 4x no adjustments. I used the elastic waistband since DBP doesn’t have strong enough recovery for the yoga band which was my other option. I removed several inches from the inseam as my inseam measures 27.5 inches.

I made my mom the same options in an XL graded to a XXL. She has the FBA bodice on which saved me the trouble of doing that adjustment. Her pants are size medium. I added 1.5 inches to her top length and removed several inches from her inseam. We both are wearing a short sleeve top with the pants for our bottoms. I made an elastic waistband for her as well.

Other options you can use: Long or Short Sleeve (and a separate FBA Bodice piece!), Shorts or Pants, Cuffs, Elastic or Knit Waistband (AND and optional Bum Panel)

Even though this shirt is labeled as PJ’s, I wanted you see that you can clearly wear this shirt out and about. I got tricked into placing a few Christmas bulbs on the front bushes as I was having my pictures taken.

 

OK, let’s talk about this fabric now!! Holy Puppy Dogs!! How cute it this print? I love the softness of DBP and the print is adorable. I will not admit to buy 8 yards of this print, and you can’t make me! Stitchin Pretties has a sale happening if you check it out now!!! Hooded Infinity Scarf

Does it get chilly where you live? Is it already chilly? It is cold here! Two nights ago, we had real deal, scrape your windshield, frost! I am not mentally ready for winter, but the latest release from DIBY.club is getting me physically ready! The Hooded Infinity Scarf is up for grabs- AND IT IS FREE! Yes, you read that right. FREE!!

It is designed to be made with woven fabrics and it is double layered. I love that because it becomes reversible with all of the seams hidden! The hood is assembled with three panels so it fits nicely around your head to keep you snug and warm!

I used a warm fleece as my purple plaid layer and a regular weight quilting cotton for the liner. When it gets even colder here, I can reverse it and have the warm layer against my skin!

This hood comes together pretty quickly and is very easy to assemble! I used my serger, but it bogged down a little sewing the thickest layers. The scarf tails were hand stitched, but I bet you could even do a wide zig-zag to put them together. You can make a few in an assembly line in an evening…Hello, Christmas Gifts!

Roxanne Tunic

The Roxanne Tunic is hot off the machine and I am so in love with it. This tunic length top is comfortable, perfect over leggings, and pretty stylish. You have the option of two different lengths and I choose the longer tunic length. I love boots and slim fit pants with cozy shirts in the fall so this one completely fits the bill. You can also choose between two different sleeve lengths as well. I am wearing ¾ length sleeves here. From the front this looks like a typical casual shirt, but from the back it is a little bit fancy! I also used the curved hem option instead of straight. I choose to do the faux button placket because I was feeling lazy. You can do a real button placket or go with one of the lace-up options.

I made the 4x bust graded to the 5x at the waist and hips. I also used the included full bust adjusted piece because it saves me the time and trouble of doing plus I get a better fit. This is the size I always sew for 5oo4. I like with sizing is consistent from a company. I also did a small full bicep adjustment. This pattern sizes from XXS to 5X.

This beautiful floral print on golden yellow fabric is a brushed poly from Sew Blessed. I love the suede-like this one has, so perfect for fall. I picked up the buttons from Joann’s in a series of 4 trips in 2 days….don’t ask! There was no way my mixed button collection would have this many matches and thankfully these were 5 for 99 cents! If you haven’t bought buttons lately…holy cow! They are expensive! I even got bold and used a grey to contrast with the gold.

My Opinions: Basic construction went quickly and as expected. The Button Placket is well worth the efforts. It is fun, cute, and a little bit fancy. I intend to make one or two more in the next week or so. I think this would also be cute in a slightly longer length but that would have to be as a hack, as it isn’t a pattern option.

REVERSIBLE DRESS

As I was sewing this dress up, I was trying to coming up with reasons why I needed a reversible dress. We know I NEEDED it! I decided it would make the perfect day to night outfit. You can use bright cheery colors on one side and darker sexier colors on the other. Maybe you need it for travel. One garment in your bag, but two outfits. Lastly, I thought if you were like me and a messy eater…drip your soup at lunch…no problem. Just turn your dress inside out and you’re good to go! Ok, that was in a stretch, but it is so my life!

 

This is one side of my dress. I choose to make the mini version which is a actually a knee length. The midi version is several inches longer. I chose to color block my front bodice here.

The hot pink fabric is DBP from Sly Fox Fabrics and the floral print is from Sew Blessed Fabrics.

On the flip side…

 

I have to confess that this is a mistake. My skirt is attached incorrectly. It should have been split with black in the front or back and the blue as the opposite. It works out well though and it just looks colorblocked. This blue BP is also from Sly Fox and the watercolor looking print is from… gasp….Joann’s. I picked it up last Black Friday.

Lola Bottoms

If you are going to make some amazing pants- Make them in snake skin print!

These are the Lola Pants from 5oo4 patterns. A high rise, wide leg pant that is so popular this fall. The Lola will become your new favorite pant, but they can also be your favorite capris or shorts. I sewed up my fit muslin in a woven fabric to make sure the fit was spot on. These pants are drafted to be made for a very fluid woven fabric or a lightweight knit.

Here I am wearing a size 4 x. I did a fully belly adjustment. I honestly could have probably used a 3x with a belly adjustment because this knit is so stretchy. I would recommend doing a fit muslin with a similar fabric to what you plan to use for your finished piece. Pants can be tricky to fit so I suggest you do a muslin. This is a single brushed poly from Sly Fox. I love it, I wanted a dress made out of it, but since these are such great pants I am happy with them too! Here is the link to the fabric.

In typical 5oo4 fashion there are loads of options with these pants.

• Pants, Capris or Shorts
• Belt Loops and Waist Tie Belt
• Pockets
• Woven or knit construction

I didn’t create belt loops or tie belt because I knew I wanted to pair my Lola’s with an extra wide belt. I am sort of obsessed with this belt lately!

Showing it with and without a sweater! Looks great for a variety of seasons which is perfect for Ohio.
